FOG - Reboot?

I really love this old game, and definitely prefer it to FOG II;
but as the screenshots make clear the sprites on the game map, look nothing like their source models in the manual.
I'm sure I would get a lot more play out of this game, if the devs gave us the option of using Counters instead of Sprites.
I don't imagine it would be that hard a mod. And my spur a reboot of interest in a game that IMHO really deserves it.

As a player with a long time interest in the ancients. I feel sure their is an audience Hungry for this material. Especially among 6mm players in the US and UK..

Your thoughts, or any guidance as to mod tools appropriate to this game.
