Today we want to share some information about one of the new additions - environmental hazards.</p> <p> As the game is now, the locations where battles take place have a limited impact on the result. There are asteroids and gas clouds, but they are mostly cosmetic, and unless your ships collide with an asteroid, the environment has little bearing on who wins the battle.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> With the next update, that will change. We will be introducing a number of environment elements that will open up new strategic possibilities when engaging the enemy.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <strong>Dust Nebula</strong></p> <p> Dust nebula interfere with guidance systems on missiles, and targeting systems of capital ships. A capital ship that enters a dust nebula can&rsquo;t be targeted with guided munitions, and might be harder to hit with guns. However whilst inside the Nebula that same ship can&rsquo;t target enemies and has reduced accuracy firing with its own weapons.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <strong>Asteroid Clouds</strong></p> <p> Asteroid clouds are clusters of tiny rocks that aren&rsquo;t big or dense enough to affect capital ships, but will impede squadrons and missiles. They will add to the dynamism of even the simplest encounters, and throw new opportunities and threats into the mix. As previously, though, we&#39;ll treat them in a rather generalistic way, but from the next dev diary onwards you can expect more indepth information about specific areas of the game.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <u><strong>Graphics</strong></u></p> <p> Despite a significant change in underlying technology (3D and Unreal Engine), we have tried to preserve the same general approach to graphics which always worked so well in past games. Terrain is clean and unobtrusive, and units are big, crystal-clear and stand out well from the map. This is important when the game has hundreds of different units, and the player must be able to distinguish them all at a glance. That&rsquo;s why we never considered showing several smaller models for a single unit, which might look more &ldquo;real&rdquo;, but ultimately is not usable in this kind of a game.</p> <p> As for terrain, we have drawn a lot of inspiration from Panzer General 2, which was widely considered the most beautiful in the old Panzer General series. It can scale to any monitor size (all assets are done in 4K and scale to the required size), adapt to any screen ratio, and allows scaling of certain elements (like the unit list and the minimap) to make the best use of screen space on any monitor, from square to super-wide or multiple monitor configuration.</p> <p> We are making sure that all information about unit stats, traits, game rules etc. is available directly on screen or in the tooltips and is easy to find. All commands will also be available on the screen and easily discoverable, without relying on hot keys and other obscure means to invoke a function. All units will receive their supply (fuel and ammo) automatically, as long as supply is possible.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <u><strong>AI</strong></u></p> <p> The AI in Panzer Corps 2 is a complete rewrite, it does not reuse any code from Panzer Corps, and it uses some more advanced approaches. This means that the sequel will feature a new, completely different AI opponent.</p> <p> The new AI is designed and implemented with random maps and random campaigns in mind. This means that it cannot rely on AI scripting at all. It must be able to figure out the structure of any map on its own, achieve any kind of scenario objective and try to prevent the opponent from doing the same. It can also purchase and deploy its whole army in case there are no preconfigured units in a given scenario.</p> <p> On the other hand, AI scripting options in Panzer Corps 2 are also richer than in its predecessor. This means that it is possible to fine-tune the AI to exact desired behavior, which can be useful in a historical setting.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <u><strong>Editor and modding</strong></u></p> <p> Modding community of Panzer Corps was always strong and vibrant, and we are fully committed to making Panzer Corps 2 a modder-friendly game as well. Panzer Corps 2 will include the editor from day one, and this editor will be even easier to use than the editor in Panzer Corps. Although the new map engine is 3D, scenario designer still only needs to specify terrain type for each hex, and the rest of the map will be generated by the engine automatically. Other useful features not found in its predecessor are full support of Undo/Redo, group operations on hexes and units and much more streamlined interface for scripting and AI. At the same time, the designer can bypass all UI and write scripts directly in Lua language which requires a certain skill but gives immense flexibility and power in return.</p> <p> Just like in Panzer Corps, gameplay data tables will remain in open text format and can be easily edited. People familiar with Unreal Engine can download Unreal Editor and create much deeper mods, which includes adding new units, new terrain types, changing map generation rules etc.</p> <p> Also, we are working on a proper mod manager which was sorely missing in Panzer Corps.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> The main point we were trying to make in these three introductionary dev diaries is that <strong>Panzer Corps 2 is far from a mere facelift</strong>. While staying true to traditions of the series, our goal is to improve playing experience across the board, and every single aspect of the new game receives a lot of thought and attention. It&rsquo;s a huge and very ambitious project for our small team, and we really want to make it right, so it is taking a lot of time. In fact, much more time than originally expected. In hindsight, we were a bit too optimistic with our estimations and should have probably delayed the announcement. Despite the fact that we use dynamic terrain even in the scenario setup (it is not a fixed map) as it gives much more flexibility, we didn&rsquo;t consider this feature to be that interesting for players.<br /> Moreover, Map Generator would require a great deal of additional work and we had plenty of other things on top of our to-do list.<br /> <br /> When alpha testing started and feedback and suggestions started flowing in, I was really taken aback by the staggering number of requests to add a custom <strong>Map Generator</strong>. I was expecting that players would prefer playing the historical scenario rather than a random map.</p> <p> And so, as we had done so many times before, we re-thought our priorities and added this feature into our schedule. There was already a raw Map Generator partially implemented but it was a separate tool not incorporated into the game. It was also not that user-friendly and not modular enough to meet the standards we had in mind.</p> <p> <br /> The first phase of the project was mapping out the games already out there. I was looking for the right way to do this, to find the key settings for the map generator and to identify pitfalls of other map generators and how to avoid them. After a couple of months of development the first version of the map generator was ready.</p> <p> We used a number of standard settings such as map size (ranging from tiny to huge world), map type (ratio between water and land mass), climate type (hospitable to barren) or density of population (how crowded the world is and the distance between players). But that was just the beginning.</p> <p> From my perspective the biggest issue in the majority of map generators for other games is the fact that they tend to force you to really long and boring early phases once you have begun playing. You have to hit &quot;end turn&quot; around fifty times to eventually get to develop some infrastructure and build a couple of units to be able to actually play and enjoy the game. This was a no-go for me. I decided early on that we needed to add a Development setting allowing players to choose if they want to start with a lonely nomad unit roaming the unknown world or if they would rather start as a crowned king of a state that stands on solid foundations like cities, roads, fields for farming and few trained military units to build upon.</p> <p> There are five different options to satisfy everyone&rsquo;s taste.<br /> <br /> But soon enough we realized that the basic settings are not quite enough. The worlds we generated were great, some of the maps even surpassing our expectations but we needed more options to modify the gameplay itself.</p> <p> Some were easy to implement, for example Resource abundance that allows the player to configure how many mines will be available on the map which affects the player&rsquo;s ability to develop as well as how fast and tough the conflicts over resources will be. Hand in hand with this setting goes the Player&rsquo;s resource abundance which sets the resources stockpiles the player has at the beginning of the game.</p> <p> Similarly, the Diplomatic Relations setting defines how (un)friendly neighboring nations will be, and the Independent Cities setting determines the number of standalone independent neutral cities on the map.</p> <p> Players can also specify which victory conditions they want in their game - overall victory, military superiority, technological dominance and country development.<br /> <br /> All the above settings were added to the Map Generator in a natural process following the logic of any world creator. However, what makes every single game fun is the way it unfolds in a different direction every time and forces players to adjust their strategy to current conditions. Sometimes you get the upper hand, yet another time you struggle to keep up with other forces around you.</p> <p> There are two settings that determine how fair the game will be, determining whether or not one between the player and AI opponents will start in a more powerful position.</p> <p> The Game Balance setting adjusts starting conditions. Set to max, all players (human and AI) will have similar starting point in terms of number of military units, settlers and cities. Set to minimum, the development span will be quite big &ndash; some nations will be already large developed empires whereas others will have to make do with just a city-state.</p> <p> However, this setting does not really say on which end you going to end up. For this, there is the Player Advantage setting which allows you to choose what kind advantage over all other players you will have. You can decide to create a new world with you leading a mighty and established empire surrounded by younger tribes, or you can take up the challenge and start as the very last runner in the conquest for supremacy. We invested a huge amount of time into balancing so that even if you draw the shortest straw, you will be able to survive at least few dozens of turns to prove your worth.<br /> <br /> Now back to the map: there is still one thing left to mention. The historical setup has a contour map that we created tile by tile to make the world feel real.
