Type: News

The Silent Service, the new standalone expansion for CMANO, is due for release on March 1st, using the new v1.14 game update. Following Part 1, we now conclude coverage of the scenarios of this new battleset. We use the default listing order (easiest to hardest) but players can also choose to try the scenarios in chronological order, or in any order of their preference.

Date: 25 March 1987
Location: West Atlantic
Playable Side: Soviet Union
Duration: 32 hours

The United States enjoyed technical superiority in terms of sonar, signal processing and submarine quieting for the majority of the Cold War. In the mid-1980s however, the Soviet Union made massive leaps in quieting their submarines, with the newest Victor-III class submarines being comparable in stealth to the United States Sturgeon class. These dramatic advances were in no small part the result of the Walker spy ring, and the Toshiba-Kongsberg affair. After decades of being ‘one step behind’ in terms of operational freedom, in the spring of 1987 Admiral Chernavin initiated Operation Atrina, known afterwards in US naval intelligence circles as ‘The Great Soviet Sub Suckerpunch’ – and some of the finest Soviet submarines ever assembled surged out on the Atlantic.

The Enemy Below

Date: 28 August 1950
Location: Sea of Japan
Playable Side: United States
Duration: 2 days

The UN intervention in Korea is going poorly. The Korean People’s Army (KPA) has pushed UN forces back to a pocket extending approximately 60nm from the port of Busan. The remnants of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Army and the US 8th Army are currently preparing to mount a desperate defense of this perimeter along the Nakdong River.

The speed and momentum of the KPA assault has exceeded all pre-war calculations; intelligence suspects that the KPA is receiving material assistance from the Soviet Union and People’s Republic of China. While the bulk of the US 7th Fleet prepares to mount a counter-attack at Seoul, the USS Segundo is tasked with identifying Soviet shipping that may be assisting in the war effort.

Empires Apart Dev Diary - The goal of the game

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

In our previous dev diaries we focused on the different available game modes, as well as the design behind the UI. Today we are going to cover a number of different subjects, but all have something in common: why we decided to make Empires Apart.

It’s no secret that we drew heavy inspiration from games that marked our childhood: Age of Empires, Empire Earth, and others. We wanted to bring back that feeling, the familiar atmosphere of games we loved, but also add our own touch, as well as modernize the formula, bring it to 2018’s standards. Empires Apart is, basically, the game we wanted to play.

Desert War Mechanicics .Shock Explained

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

“Everyone was talking and chatting, when slowly came into sight the first tank I ever saw.  Not a monster but a very graceful machine with beautiful lines….  Here was the missing tool of penetration, the answer to the dominance on the battlefield of small-arms fire.”—J.F.C. Fuller

Matrix Games/Slitherine’s upcoming release of Brian Kelly’s Desert War 1940-42 uses a simple game mechanic often found in WWII board games.  It gives tank units a “special place” in the player’s toolbox—a positive shift to the combat force ratio if attacking, and the opposite when defending.  Coming up short of attack factors?  No problem!  Throw in some tanks.  A 1 to 1 attack can become a 2 to 1, 3 to 1, 4 to 1, etc.  In Desert War 1940
