KO Tournament update . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

The final will be between Nosy_Rat (Sassanids 591-628 AD) and XLegione (Bretons 411-579 AD). Congratulations to both players on reaching the final and winning Slitherine vouchers as well. Commiserations to the two beaten semi-finalists rexhurley and dkalenda.

Division D

Tresantes (Pyrrhic) defeats SawyerK (Seleucid) 53-27

A good scrap, with some rolls going my way. One of SawyerK’s pike units (veteran, with a general) survived being hit from the front by one pike, in the flank by an elephant, and another pike in the other flank, all at once. It went on to rout two of those attackers before the battle was lost elsewhere...
Thanks for the game!

When the quartemaster tells you he doesn't have any mountain boots, only sandals, you need to tell him where you're going to shove your vine stick if he doesn't immediately reassess his stock position, or...

Or you could find another plan that doesn't involved marching your legionaries up a very steep hill onto rough ground, in the hopes of teaching some amateurish medium foot the basics of modern warfare.

Trouble is, it's such a good plan.

Okay the slopes are steep, okay the top's rough ground, but it's only lightly defended and you are seding a screen of auxiliaries up first. And, once you've taken the lightly defended hill (Pork Chop, anyone?) you'll have the main mass of your opponent's army trapped in the valley. The valley's already sealed off by a legionary blocking force and he's only got endless masses of more amateurish medium foot plus a Hercualean stable full of cavalry. Well... we dont really do cavalry, being Roman. Cavalry's for wusses... I mean equestrians. What did the middle classes ever do for us, eh?

The main sweep up the hill's about as successful as cheap Gallic dinnerware at a Greek wedding, and soon the broken bits are rolling back down the hill backwards. Blocking force has done it's job now, nothing to block for anymore, and so they very sensibly head for the... no not the hills, in the opposite direction, hoping that crappy little local road really does indeed lead to Rome.

Great battle, Rob, thanks for the game, and very well done. A very well deserved victory.

Best Wishes

Mike

Division C

Sunnyboy (Ostrogoths 493-561 AD) beat paulmcneil (Ancient British 60 BC-80 AD) 51-24

Tough battle with the screaming Celtic hordes making good use of two wooded areas flanking the map to confuse and disconcert the Gothic horsemen. Out in the open however, the valiant loose order warbands of the Briton could not match the Ostrogoth armoured lancers and were put to flight.

Thanks for the game Paul, well played!

Division B

devoncop (Arkanian) beat Lydianed (Lydians) 63% to 48% in a very hard fought contest which revolved around success by the Arkanian flanks managing to capitalise on heroic resistance in the centre by inferior Citizen Hoplites against superior Lydian Hoplite forces.

Thanks to my gracious and friendly opponent.

devoncop (Jewish Revolt) beat Morbio (Ptolemaic) 52% to 27%

A complicated broken desert map helped the zealots and helped by a wide flanking movement around the Ptolemaic left the Revolt won the day.

Many thanks to my opponent for a tough fight.

rexhurley (Numidian/Moorish) drew with devoncop (Jewish Revolt) 59/43. In a swirling complicated mass fight of medium infantry v lights the copper laid down the law and got the upper hand, however the djinni swirled and ebbed and kept at it. Unfortunately although he pushed all the way to my edge of the map the copper then disappeared into the woods never to emerge again while the Djinni screamed and whirled in frustration... with 2 turns to go we agreed a draw as I wasn't going into the woods to play and he wasn't coming out. Thanks for the laughs and entertainment Ian off to our next encounter in classic *-)

Great thanks to Lydianed who played a great game. I'm not sure how I won, it always felt like I was on the back foot.
