The Great Rebellion - ECW Team Campaign

Post by keyth »

Is there any interest in a team ECW campaign? The idea is to have two teams, Royalists and Parliamentarian (no surprises there :)), with wins and losses affecting the sentiment of the English regions until one side has won the hearts (or scared the cr*p out of) the majority of the population. Individual scores will also be tracked for bragging purposes. More detail to follow if anyone is interested.

This is the kind of idea that should have been included in the original game.
It was advertised as strategic but in reality is strictly tactical.

To give a bit more detail...

As the Great Rebellion starts and England descends into civil war, the country is divided between the King and Parliament. For the purposes of the campaign, the regions of England are as follows:

South-West: Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset
South-East: London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex
South: Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire
Anglia: Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire
Central-East: Middlesex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire
Central-West: Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire
Mid-East: Rutland, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire
Mid-West: Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire
North-East: Northumberland, Durham, North & East Ridings of Yorkshire
North-West: Lancashire, Westmorland, Cumberland, West Riding of Yorkshire

As the Year of Our Lord 1642 begins, each region has a Sentiment towards either King or Parliament; sentiment travels through the range Weak, Moderate, Strong and Fervent. Sentiment across the country is balanced between the opposing sides overall, though with regional fluctuations. As battles are won and lost, sentiment will swing one way or the other until one side has an unassailable majority and is victorious.

I am interested too, with the following caveats:

1) I have never played a multiplayer game of P&S
2) I'm not very good (on the middle difficulty I seem to be making a speciality out of winning TYW scenarios by the narrowest of margins, although I am up to the 8th one now)
3) I am not sure whether the convention is to play turns as and when available, or to make an agreed time and bat turns back and forth "real time"

...could someone enlighten me as to question 3?

As and when available is the norm. That is the main advantage of the PBEM++ system. No pressure.

1 is not a problem. 2 will mean that I have some company. With regard to 3, it's my intention that things should be pretty relaxed with turns being played as and when - the Civil War wasn't over in a day ;)

[ S I G H ] - - - - yet another reason to take the plunge and launch into this system. When are all those papers going to get graded?

But don't sign me up quite yet.

Thanks all for the interest!

I've got a fairly simple campaign system worked out. Each team will have a commander-in-chief, who will assign one team member to each region each turn and PM that list to me (I will never be CiC :)). This will give us the match-ups for that turn. There will be two turns per year starting in 1642.

The region's prevailing mood dictates who issues the challenge, so if a region is pro-Parliament, the Parliamentary player will set-up the challenge. Map choice should be Wide or Very Wide if using Medium force size or above and the army list should be 'in date' based on the turn year. For ease of administration (i.e. Excel :)), Royalists score negative points and Parliamentarians score positive points - there is a sliding scale of Sentiment from -8 to +8.

A win scores 1 point, with an additional 1 point for each complete 15% victory margin, so winning by 14% gets you no bonus, 15-29% 1 point, 30-44% 2 points, etc. (these values may be tweaked as the campaign progresses). The Sentiment in the region is adjusted by the battle score. For example, a Parliamentary 20% margin would result in +2 sentiment, a Royalist 20% margin would result in -2.

Sentiment translates to Mood: 0 is Neutral, +/- 1-2 is Weak, +/- 3-5 is Moderate, +/- 6-7 is Strong and +/- 8 is Fervent; positive is Parliamentarian, negative is Royalist as mentioned above. Mood scores overall points: Weak (+/-1), Moderate (+/-2), Strong (+/-3), Fervent (+/-4).

The image below should give an idea of how it hangs together:

So currently I have as 'signed up':

keyth
cavehobbit
rbodleyscott
deadtorius
turenne
Waldorf
Aryaman
Doyley50

Two more would give us a handy starting point of five-a-side with two battles each per turn; more can of course be catered for. Any takers?

Edit: SteJones82 had asked not to be signed up just yet.

Excellent, ready to get started :)

On a first come, first served basis, does anyone have a preference for serving the King or Parliament?

I don't mind, so long as the pay (or booty) is good.
