Hmm, I definitely disagree here, Guido. I think trying to finance your armies adequately should be a central part of the game. Just to clarify one thing though, what I was envisaging was that the defending army would also incur the same (or slightly lesser) costs to mobilise armies and fleets as the attacker, so there would not be a financial penalty as such on the attacking player.
2) a stability check may be of course be inserted in the rules and could also work well. I'd prefer anyway to link it only to the stability level (it's easier to manage). Then a civil war battle against his own army led by another player randomly chosen could be the best solution, with the dissolving of the nation in case of defeat, the survival and the loss of 100 ducats in case of draw and that of 50 ducats in case of victory. Obviously until the battle wouldn't be finished the player wouldn't be allowed to make any other action.
Yes, something like this would work very well.
3) I agree that academy should be required for some kind of diplomatic agreement but, in order of not making thier construction substantially mandatory, I would limit this feature to the signing of Mutual Defence Agreements and Alliances.
Yes, OK.
4) No problem in amending slightly the financial bonuses of random events.
OK.
5) Maybe, instead of imposing limit of this kind, we could imagine only for this kind of attack (allied) a little cost of 25 ducats.
Well, this links to point 1, but there should be some cost, I agree very much.

Hi all!
Here are the most expected results of the last lottery draw:

1) 1st number
Hafsid (Genova) 72
Venetians (Roma) 52
The naval encounter has been won by the infidels and the Venetians lose 1 fleet .. (not really lucky with those lottery draws!!! at least nobody can say I'm cheating.. 8) )

2) 2nd number
Bari 81 - iandavidsmith !!!!!!   :? :P  :( :x
Napoli 74 - kilroy
So Ian is going to lead the Provencals vs the Castilians (If I would you I'd really start playing lotteries!)

3) 3rd number:
Palermo 86 - TGM
Firenze 84 - ericdoman1
Which means that TGM will confront the Milanese leading the Emilian forces.

The Major Council, under the auspices of the Doge, willingly accept the alliance's renewal with the Duchy of Milan, expressing the trust that in these times of aggressions a friendly development of relationships will reassert the possessions of both Nations!

Ian,

You need to make some alliances so you'll be inelligible to command 3rd party armies against your allies ;-).

While Abd hidde-al-Aziz III رائع(the magnificent) sets foot on the soon to be Hafsid region of Crete, he left the defence of Marmarica to his most trusted general, Aba Yahya Zakariya al-Lihyani.

6. A potted history of the Byzantine Empire 1204-1453

By the first half of the 15th century the Byzantine Empire was in terminal decline. The process had begun at the beginning of the 13th century with the sack of Constantinople in 1204 by a Latin crusader army. Byzantine successor states were established in Nicaea, Epirus and Trebizond. In Anatolia the Seljuk Turk polity of Rum was also weakening, under pressure from the Mongols in the 1240s, allowing the emergence of independent beyliks, including the Ottomans under Osman I (in 1299).

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... svg&page=1

The Empire of Nicaea had managed to recapture Constantinople in 1261 and there was a revival of Byzantium under the rule of Michael VIII Palaiologos (1259-82), Andronikos II (1282-1328) and Andronikos III (1328-1341).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Micha ... (head).jpg

But after the death of Andronikos III, civil war weakened the grip of the Byzantines in the Balkans allowing the Serbian ruler Stefan IV Dushan (1331-1346) to briefly establish a Serbian Empire. The Ottomans became active on the European mainland from 1354 onwards and eventually defeated the Serbs at Kosovo Polje in 1389. After this they gradually extended their control in the Balkans greatly reducing the territory controlled by Byzantine Emperor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Battl ... o_1389.PNG

The last Palaiologos emperors were . . .

Manuel II 1391-1425 (co-emperors 1403-7 and 1416-1425)
John VIII 1425-1448
Constantine XI 1448-1453

So Ian looks rather like this chap . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Palaio.jpg

Finally, in 1453, the Ottomans, led by Sultan Mehmed, besieged the city and after a two month siege the city was taken leaving just the Despotate of Morea (conquered by the Ottomans in 1460) and the Empire of Trebizond (conquered by the Ottomans in 1461) under Byzantine control.

The Venetians had gallantly repelled the attack launched by the Neapolitan independent province of Calabria (incited by the ottomans) against Apulia!

7. A potted history of Castile 1230-1479

The Crown of Castile was formed in 1230 as a result of the union of the crowns and parliaments of the kingdoms of Castile and Leon. The 14th century saw a major dynastic struggle between the sons of Alfonso XI which was eventually won by Henry, Count of Trastamara after major battles at Najera and Montiel beween 1367-9.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... svg&page=1

Under Henry III (1390-1406) the power of the Castilian monarchy recovered as measures were taken to curb the rights of the nobility. The economy began to prosper and lawlessness decreased. The position of Jews in Castile also improved. Henry fought a short war with Portugal between 1396 and 1402; his navy regularly confronted the English; and he renewed the struggle with the kingdom of Granada, winning an important victory at the Battle of Collejares. However his untimely death in the same year prevented him from completing this campaign.

He was succeeded by John II who ruled until 1454. This is what Chris looks like . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:John_ ... astile.jpg

John seemed to have been a rather weak king and he was very much dominated by Alvaro de Luna, who maintained his influential position until the last year of John's reign. He was eventually executed in 1453 as John succumbed to the wishes of his second wife, Isabella of Portugal who resented the dominant position of de Luna.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:20070 ... e_Luna.jpg

The main features of his reign included the introduction of the Valladolid laws, which placed many restrictions on Jews, requiring them to wear distinctive clothes and banning them from holding administrative positions; a war with Aragon which resulted in the expulsion of John's ambitious cousins, the Aragonese Infanta (Henry of Villena and John II of Aragon) from Castile; a second war against the Moors of Granada In 1431 and victory at the Battle of La Higueruela which enabled John to place Yusuf IV on the throne in exchange for tribute and vassal status to Castile; and a second conflict with the Infantes in 1445 which saw John II and Alvaro de Luna victorious once more, this time at the battle of Olmedo where Infante Henry, Duke of Villena, was killed.

John was succeeded by Henry IV ("the Impotent") who ruled rather ineptly between 1454 and 1474, but under the rule of the "Catholic Monarchs" (los Reyes Católicos) Isabella and Ferdinand, the Crowns of Castile and Aragon were united in 1479.

I'd like to remind the players that, having the Milanese not declared if their fleet was to defend Corsica, no naval encounter has to be fought and the Aragonese are liable to launch their land attack on the island.
