Turn 3 Battles

Carthage Province 27
Macedonia 500 (inc. War Leader) Tiavals vs Romans 400 Morbio

Ptolemaic province 19
Selucids 500 (inc warleader) Turk64 vs Ptolemaic 400 Jonah75 / Tophat

Neutral Province 41
Romans 400 Aristides vs Lowland Gauls 400 Jonah75

Roman Province 47
Carthage 500 (inc warleader) vs Rome 400 Aristides

Neutral Province 46
Romans 500 (inc warleader) Aristides vs Romans 500 Jonah75

And if Tophat doesn't surface in next week or so, we might need to advertise for new Ptolemaic player?

Morbio, I've made the game. Password is: morbio

I'm gonna assume the "Romans" over there is a misprint and should be Carthage. :)

Province 27 has been taken over by Macedon.

Macedon 21/42 vs Carthage 37/37

The Carthagians could not hope to match my pikes on the open field, so they withdrew to the forest, where they had a massive advantage. Had they done so immediately, the invasion could have been stumped immediately.

Lesson learnt: Don't try to make a game of it in a campaign scenario, not losing is the objective when defending. If it was a fun game then hiding would be churlish so I'd want to come out and give it a go despite the slim chance. I just need to get the right mentality for the campign :)

Well played Tiavals, I've no idea what options you had to pick from (I don't have IF), but you picked a good combination that gave you a distinct advantage on the plains, but also one that could compete sufficiently in the trees too.

I think that something should be done about the "just turtle on a hill" advantage that the defender has. But what? I'm not sure.

Morbio, for the next battle, I believe I am going to go even more tree-focused. ;)

My army list is mostly the same as the Later Macedonian from ROR, but with a number of options that they don't have. Only one turn with my great army list, then it's down to the Later Macs. :)

T: "I think that something should be done about the "just turtle on a hill" advantage that the defender has. But what? I'm not sure."

I agree.

What about:

Attacker wins = he takes the province
Defender wins = he keeps the province
Draw = province becomes neutral

This last result could be justified by the idea that though the defender hasn't lost his army, if he turtles, the attacking army is probably rampaging and pillaging the countryside and towns and so the populace gets rather annoyed.

Gameplay-wise, you might still sometimes go for a draw to keep your opponent from getting the province but this way one would have a strong motivation as the defender to give it a go. It would also keep the pace of the campaign going. Maybe... thoughts?

Seems reasonable since people have limited attacks. Can't be abused too badly.

Seems reasonable. I'll admend the rules tomorrow. A few other admendments on the way to - covering what happens when a battle drags on (holding up the campaign) and format for orders.

Meanwhile we really need a new player to take on Ptomemaic Egypt, as Tophat has returned - any ideas?

What about play continues but those still fighting have only 1 of their 2 armies (and no navals) for the following turn?

Province 47 falls to Carthage.

Carthage 12/40 vs Rome 41/40

Rome tried to hold the rugged high ground and the forest to nullify the Carthage cavalry and spears, but the MF and the skirmishers were up to the task!
