Battle phase 361AD

Image

The Romans pounce on the marauding Alemanni and Vandals.....while the Franks take advantage while they are busy to sack Vindelicum.....

First Battle of Treveri, 361AD
First Roman Western Army (500+100=600pts) vs Alemanni (500pts)
Both sides pick VERY OPEN terrain, Roman must include 8 poor limitanae from frontier forces and remember other army list limitations

First Battle of Savaria, 361 AD
Second Roman Western Army (530+5 Limitanae = 555pts) vs Vandals (500pts)
Both sides pick MIXED terrain, Roman must include 5 poor limitanae from frontier forces and remember other army list limitations

Good luck! Post results here!

First Battle of Savaria, 361 AD

Roma
25/45 (3523/13500) 555 ap's

vs

Vandalia
51/45 (4708/13500) 500 ap's
camp sacked ( although not much was found except dirty socks)

Fearing the barbarian lancers General Maximius Thrax was able to maneuver to an rugged, desert like moonscape, apparently quite comman in the Alps, to anchor both flanks on steep craggy hills and cactus plantations. Even the lowly limitanei were able to operate with some effectiveness.

*carrier pigeon sent to to General Stilichio of the ist Army of the West. : Have the Alemani stirred from their camps yet? if we can finish them off decisively then perhaps that most slippery of all barbarian kings Blatherguthredicus might get caught in a vicegrip of three Roman armies....*

Hey Peter, were you able to successfully reinstall FOG? If not you can always have one of your barbarian cohorts fight this battle for you, we dont want to risk the wrath of the ump so soon in the game :)

Battle of Trevaria

Romans
600 aps
17/51 2559/15300
vs
Alemans
500 aps
49/44 6208/13200

The Alemans deployed their allied lancers on one extreme flank (cleverly hidden in the scrub) and the infantry on the other. Once the cavalry was discovered however, the Roman army simply divided into two and fought two seperate battles. Overwhelmingly superior #'s sealed the fate of the barbarians.....

Resultant army srtengths

Trevaria: Remaining Romans: 500 AP
Remaining Alemanni 265 AP

Savaria: Remaining Vandals: 326
Remaining Romans: 410

After fighting two battles using armies with essentially no MF available, it is clear to me that free poor limitanei for the Romans are a substantial benefit. The poor MF have been quite effective at flanking the barbarians and at holding terrain in both battles.

2 Decisive victories for the romans, they are off to a good start - though note the new army totals, the province defence is brought back up to strength, all casualties come from the field armies......balancing it up a little.......

Western prestige
+3 for a decisive win at even odds
+2 for a decisive win at >15% odds
+2 for forcing return
-1 province pillaged
NET +6
Eastern prestige
+2 for forcing return shared
+1 for no province pillaged
NET +3

Romans please record reinforcements/transfers, then next moves!

I assume that Barbarian treasuries cannot have a negative balance? Or am I at -100K for having my camp looted with no money in the Treasury?

Are defeated barbarian armies retreated at the conclusion of the turn when the battle occurred or will they be required to use their next move to make the retreat? I think the former works better or else defeated barbarian armies will be out of play for too many turns.

Yes, no negatives, when all you have a few rags, the roman looters don't accept an IOU....

Yes, they are driven back the same turn...see the google spreadsheet, both armies are free to raid again in 364....

Not to be a big whiner :x but not so sure about the causualties the Romans suffered....

You took my total casualties including the garrison, then backed off the garrisons inherant AP's , THEN subtracted the full aps lost.....ouch

I would have been better off forgoing using those xtra troops altogther (is that an option??)

Pretty sure the barbarians would have liked that as well:)

*Scoffs at the moanings and whimperings of the Romans.*

We shall pounce upon your weak, miserably army and show you what real casualties are!

Other alternatives:
>proportion casualties to the frontier forces.....but I don't want to track different strengths in each province....
>assume the limitanae are automatically brought back to strength (from where?)
>reduce the numbers in all provinces as they sustain casualties

Romans can always not take the troops-but given they add to your total strength, taking them and keeping them out of the combat will reduce the % casualties on your field force.....a reason not to take them would be to keep your strength below 15% advantage

Not really , FOG game mecahincs really dont work that way. Plus your not seperating casualties between troops anyways. Realistically the frontier scum could be used as cannon fodder saving the strength of the field army. :)

What about having it similar to LW where the winner suffered only a % of actual casualties(50% ?) , the loser full? Reduce the Barring that i am having a hard time seeing long term viable strategy for the Romans. Dont take the free AP's in you own capitol and lose the battle or take them but suffer a double whammy on your remaining field army. Iroically more wins equals more prestige which equls less recruits... bribing the barbs is also not viable as it will cause you to lose the game (Rome only has one opponent in this game, the other Roman)

or we could just play it out and see what happens....gulp :D
