Londo (Sasanians) 15/43 - Ian (Byzantines) 33/33

The Persians retreated to the left of the field, hoping to buy time for the flanking force to get there. The levy spearmen stayed on the hill, and were joined by some cavalry. But Persians couldn't keep retreating forever, and soon there was a mass cataphract engagement. Persians did quite well against the superior Byz cataphracts, but the elite ones were unstoppable, and inflicted the majority of casualties Persians suffered.

Once this cataphract slogging match was underway, most Byz forces were drawn in, not leaving enough to guard against the Persians on the hill. At the right moment they came down and hit some Byz units from behind, sealing the deal. The Persian flanking force was blocked by Byz infantry until the end, when they managed to partially break through.

Londo (Kufans) 26/48 - Ian (Syrians) 60/60

The situation would have become unpleasant for the Kufans if the battle had continued. Syrians had broken through on both flanks, and would have been able to threaten the Kufan rear, just as the Syrian second infantry line collapsed in the centre.

Ian, could you post the result against davouthojo 'byzantine vs sassanian' before it disappears?

Any move lately from the four remaining games?

Hooray, davouthojo returned from the dead!

Londo (Sassanians) 17/53 - davouthojo (Arabs) 23/45

Londo 5.1
davouthojo 3.2

The Persians avoided contact with the main body of Arabs, and tried to work horse archers around behind them, while moving most of the cataphracts and dailami to the left flank to crush the smaller Arab force. It was all working quite nicely until the game abruptly ended. "Bugger!" as we Persians say.

It seems a bit harsh on Persians to have a relatively short time limit, since their strategy must be based on shooting and manoeuvre, which take time, as opposed to charging the Arab spear wall, which isn't likely to end well.

all the scenarios have a limit of 12 turns to prevent excessive maneuvering which was not possible with the primitive command and control of the period.

the sassanids were no parthians. their army was built to fight the byzantines who had also built their army to fight the sassanids: a quick shower of arrows and then the heavies went in. in short, they were reliant on shock, not attrition like steppe horse armies.

in the scenario, the cataphracts need to wait for an opening (the disruption of an arab infantry unit from archery) to charge. even against non disrupted infantry they only charge at -1 and being superior have a good chance to not disrupt should they lose the impact. in the melee phases, it's equal but they have more staying power (since the arab infantry is only average (although many have leaders)) and can pull away from danger if they can't win the melee. the dailami units are another weapon to disrupt the infantry spear wall. it takes more skill to play the sassanids but it is no suicide for the sassanids to confront the arabs head on, which would conform to their normal tactical doctrine (and the scenario was designed and tested to work that way).

Londo (Arabs) 29/42 - davouthojo (Nubians) 64/58

Londo 11.0
davouthojo 6.9

The Arab cavalry and camelry retreated from the oasis, leaving the infantry to hold on as long as they could - a bit mean I know, but they will have their reward in Paradise! The infantry were shot up and overwhelmed, and then Nubian archers advanced into the open, looking for things to shoot at.

Meanwhile, the Arab cavalry horde concentrated on clearing the ridge line on their left. Once this was accomplished after a hard fight, they swept down on the Nubian archers in the open, getting some revenge for the atrocities committed on their infantry!

That's my last game. Thanks to everyone, and particularly fogman!
