The early turns.

Everything follows a fairly standard pattern early on with Poland falling on 11th October, here's an image of the invasion after 2 turns:

Image

Holland also falls the same turn.

1939 passes relatively uneventfully as the French forces prepare defences and a Canadian GAR is sent across the Atlantic to help defend against the might of the German military machine. Unfortunately the GAR is reduced to just 2 steps by Kriegsmarine action in the form of SUB wolfpacks.

The British manage to do some damage to the SUB unit near Belfast with their Strat bomber but it isn't significant.

Will update soon as it's now nearing Spring 1940...........

It seems to be something strange going on with the color overlay showing hex ownership. It looks like the overlay is missing so you don't see a slight difference in background color between Axis, Allied and Russian hex control. Are you playing on a MAC? Is fog of war turned off?

No it's Win 8.1 - I'll check the settings, fog of war is on.

There is an issue that I can't zoom in further than that shown.

Will check the settings.

I think you have set the game to low ram settings. Go to

C:\users\<user id>\My documents\ CEAW Grand Strategy 3.10

Open the file GS310_settings.txt

Make sure LOW_RAM is set to 2 and not a lower value. Edit it if it's different. Try to start the game again. Now you should be able to get zoom level 3.

The winter passes without too much to report as the phoney war drags on.

I bring a Canadian GAR across the Atlantic to help defend the UK, but the German Wolf Packs intercept it and reduce it to 2 steps. They also manage to destroy completely one convoy. It isn't completely one sided as the british bomber takes the shine off the German subs but the damage inflicted is fairly light.

Most of my navy is stationed around the Norwegian coast ready to intercept Weserübung should it happen, but everything is quiet in the Baltic.

I recruited the French leader Huntzinger as his defensive bonus may come in handy.

30th Dec - Snow

Production Points

21 UK
17 Fr
7 US
16 USSR

The BEF deploys it's MEC with Alexander to lead them to France this turn. German subs again hit a convoy and cause moderate damage. British policy is to escort convoys with destroyers but with only 1 per convoy they cannot provide very effective support yet.

A few more quiet turns with the British mainly investing in research and the French building a few defensive units.

19th Mar 1940

Fair Weather

Production

Britain 24
France 19
USA 12
USSR 26

The phoney war is over as the weather improves - Belgium surrenders without putting up much defence. France prepares for imminent invasion. Two Corps are built this turn.

8th April 1940

Production
UK 24 + Convoy 10PP
FRA 16
USA 12
USSR 26

Pretty savage blitzkrieg, the BEF is wiped out with the 5th Panzergrenadierkorps reaching the outskirts of Paris. The French manage to reorganise into some semblance of a defensive line and surround the lead element of the German thrust but it's unlikely that they can holder the perimeter long enough to be more than a minor irritation to the Wehrmacht.

The decision to hold a withdrawn defensive line using the rivers for defence looks to be the wrong one!

Still, with two new Corps deployed perhaps they can at least hold out until June!

I'm surprised to see Italian air units active in Belgium and Germany on 8 April 1940 (is this date correct?). Do you know how Italy has been activated so early?

David is scheduled for a very tough learning experience since he picked one of the very best Grand Strategy players (Morris) as his opponent. You learn a lot by seeing how an elite player can execute his strategies. The chances of victory is probably very small, but the chance for a big improvement in game play after this game is probably very big. :)

Thanks for Borger's overpraise ! Actually it is still too early to talk about which side will win , it is only 1940 now . Long way to go . But since there are already many my AARs , I will try to provide some new Axis strategy to make this AAR amazing & different from my others AAR . :)

Turn 13

28th April 1940

Fair weather

Production

GB 24 plus convoy 16PP
FR 16
US 12
USSR 26

The German blitzkrieg rolls on and despite the French managing to surround an isolate an advance unit, losses are heavy. French units now in short supply to defend, trying to hold the line of the Seine.

Image

Turn 14

18th May 1940

Fair Weather

Production

United Kingdom 36
France 16
USA 12
ISSR 26

Paris is now severly threatened as the Germans cross the Seine to the East of Paris, very little resistance now.

Image

Middle East now turns Allied.

Italian forces looking to invade Egypt, Australians brought up to defend from Persia.

The Afrika Korps also now in N Africa, British Sub spots their transport and hits for one point as they dock in Benghazi and next turn hit Italian transport for 2 steps in same port.

Paris is now severly threatened.

Turn 15

7th June 1940

Weather - Fair

Production

United Kingdom: 38
France: 18
USA: 16
USSR: 36

The Germans sweep aside most of the French forces as they now envelop Paris, the capital will surely fall next time.

In the Eastern Med the Italian fleet inflicts serious damage to the British CV that has to withdraw to the Red Sea, a British Sub manages to hit an Italian BB so it is now down to 6 steps. For now the Italians control the Eastern Med but the British can have 2 BBs back to full strength with the CV once repaired plus the Sub to make a fight of it later on.

The Italians are massing on the Egyptian border ready to invade so the British pull back to find better defensive terrain further East.

Turn 16

27th June 1940

Weather - Fair

Production

United Kingdom - 38
USA - 16
USSR - 37

Total - 91 PP

France surrenders, the same date as in RL to all intents and purposes.

Sealion is quite likely I suspect, plenty of time for it in 1940 now and we've lost the BEF.

Fairly quiet in North Africa, the Germans are bringing more units in for the DAK but the Italians are holding back for now. We dig in around El Alamein, need to wait for the funds for a leader in this theatre.

The Mediterranean fleet is being repaired.

In the UK we now have 3 full strength FTR to help repel Sealion but the Canadian MEC has been reduced to 4 steps by enemy SUBs as it traverses the Atlantic.

Turn 17 - 17th July 1940

Weather Fair

Production

United Kingdom - 38
USA - 16
USSR - 37

Quiet turn. The Germans are no doubt making good their losses and redeploying/upgrading.

Doesn't look like Sealion is going to happen though, at least not yet so Alexander is sent to the Middle East after recovering from his injuries sustained in France.

Turn 18 - 6th August 1940 - Weather Fair

Production

UK - 38
USA - 16
USSR - 37

Total = 91 PP

23 PP convoy arrives in Liverpool.

Polish Air Force activated, plenty of FTR now in the UK.

Not much going on really, German naval activity in the channel. Baltic fleet and a SUB involved, Sealion imminent? The RAF is still in good shape so maybe not yet?

German Wolfpacks causing mayhem west of Biscay almost sank a DD.

Turn 19 - 26th August 1940 -Fair Weather

Production

UK - 38
USA - 16
USSR - 37

Phoney war part 2, the RAF attacked the German Paras in Lille and knock them down two steps, U boats sink a convoy.

Turn 20 - 15th Sept 1940 - Mud

Axis invade Yugoslavia, not much can be done to help them.

Turn 21 - 5th Oct 1940 - Mud

Production

UK - 45
USA - 21
USSR - 48

Total - 114

Rather foolishly a RN carrier is lost after trying to dash through the channel to engage a German BB in the North Sea. A SUB was guarding the narrowest stretch that inflicted some damage and then the Luftwaffe and other SUBs finished off the stricken ship.

Turn 22 - 25th Oct 1940 - Clear Weather

Production

UK - 41 (-4) (Convoy 19)
USA - 21 (-)
USSR - 48 (-)

Total - 110 (-4)

Yugoslavia surrenders this turn with minor casualties inflicted on the German invaders.

Turn 23 - 14th Nov 1940 - Fair Weather

Production

UK - 41 (-)
USA - 21 (-)
USSR - 48 (-)

Total - 110 (-)

The Battle of the Atlantic goes badly as the RN is now down to just 1 destroyer with 2 BBs. Another destroyer is being built. With plenty of German wulf packs in the Atlantic we start a concerted DD building phase and will try to regain control of the seas. The RAF is based in Cornwall and Northern Ireland as they attempt to at least damage any SUBs close to the coast.

Meanwhile in the North African theatre the British are advancing into Libya now, no sign of any real Axis opposition.

Turn 24 - 4th Dec 1940 - Snow

Production

UK - 43 (+2)
USA - 26 (+5)
USSR - 58 (+10)

Total - 127 (+17)

Advancing into Libya still, quiet turn.

Turn 25 - 24th Dec 1940 - Mud

Production

UK - 43
USA - 26
USSR - 58

Total 127 PP (-)

Large German fleet spotted in the mid-Atlantic, we'll need to send some Royal Navy units over there I think but it will be a big test and leave the UK open to Sealion possibly. Strange that the fleet has ventured out, a BB surrounded by several DDs, where are the Subs?

Image

Allies advance deeper into Libya, I can smell a trap!

Image

Turn 26 - 13th Jan 1941 - Snow

Production

UK - 43
USA - 26
USSR - 58

TOTAL 127 PP (-)

I think that my foe is going to try to dominate the Atlantic to stop the US forces launching Overlord, so I need to counter that with a fleet of my own.

One new DD arrives in port today but I daren't set sail as my entire fleet may be at risk, so more ships need to be built first.

Advancing again in N Africa, we can strike Tobruk next turn but I expect a counter attack is imminent.
