Re: The wholly unofficial points revision sticky …
Okay, tired of waiting for official word, my group is looking at testing an altered point system for mounted as follows:
Elite Superior Average Poor
Determined Horse Armored 18 15 10 6
Determined Horse Unarmored 15 12 8 5
Gendarmes F or H Arm. 19 16 11 7
Cavaliers Armored 17 14 9 5
Cavaliers Unarmored 14 11 7 4
Horse/Cavalry H Armored 16 13 9 5
Horse/Cavalry/Lt Horse Armored 12 10 7 4
Horse/Cavalry/Lt Horse Unarmored 10 8 5 3
Elephants 18
Impact Mounted 2
Hv Lance 2
Lt Lance 1
Impact Pistol 1
Carbine (Horse) 1
Carbine/Bow (Cavalry or Lt Horse) 2
Bow* 1
Melee Pistol 2
Swordsmen 1
Foot: Remove 4 point charge for Swedish Brigades
This is essentially a compromise between Nik's more popular suggestion and Alasdair's input that Armored DH and Cavaliers were a better value than heavily armored horse. We charged an extra point for heavy lances over light lances, but reduced the cost of Gendarmes by 1 more to compensate (so French Catholic Gendarmes classed as horse with heavy lance might be a bit overpriced, but considering their historical foes include Spanish horse and Gendarmes with light lance, I'm not going to worry about it too much). We also reduced the cost of mounted swordsmen and the cost of Carbine in the hands of non-evading horse.
There are still a couple of un-addressed issues:
Is the discount for cavalry (who are often also swordsmen) too much here?
How about light horse and light foot, who many would say are overpriced?
Dragoons are still a no-brainer for the cost (although I'd say the biggest problem with dragoons is more their unhistorical capabilities as super-skirmishers more than anything. It's an improvement over the liability they were in previous rule sets, but it would be nice to see a happy medium)

Re: The wholly unofficial points revision sticky …
The one thing that you've 'forgotten' IMHO is the non-evading cavalry. I'd make it:Jhykronos wrote:snipped comments here
Lance - 1 point, unless cavalry, which is 0.
Even then, lance armed cavalry are probably over-priced.
Re: The wholly unofficial points revision sticky …
Honestly, evading for cavalry is pretty useless 98% of the time anyway, since they don't have the improved maneuverability of their ancients equivalents (in 2.0 anyway). So it could be argued that all cavalry are still overpriced...ravenflight wrote:The one thing that you've 'forgotten' IMHO is the non-evading cavalry. Still, Lance/Sword cavalry are quite a bit cheaper in this system as-is. We'll see how it works out.

Well you could try and persuade me to come out of retirement and see about some sort of official amendment
No promises, as I'd have to talk to Slitherine, and Richard is too busy with the PC stuff, but if there is real interest I may be open to looking into it

Fog r has given me many happy hours of game play and I am very grateful for that Nik. I think I may well be moving on though rules wise so its not a big issue for me now. I don't have any sense of whether or not others are keen for amendments.
Thanks again

I hear what you're saying Mr Dog, but I have no idea what other renaissance rules sets out there would be anywhere near as remotely enjoyable as FoG:R. It has its faults, there is no denying. There's a couple of rules I'd like fixed, and the points scores would be a part of that, but so small an issue that probably not worth worrying about.spotteddog wrote:Fog r has given me many happy hours of game play and I am very grateful for that Nik. Re: The wholly unofficial points revision sticky …
My interest would certainly pick up if I could see a points change that made my DH, especially Polish Hussars viable (well more viable than Danish Superior HA Horse... that are half the points)
