Your favorite Ancient Scenarios (Vote now!)
I have already taken votes for Medieval battles and have begun creating historical based scenarios based on your votes (see my first scenario for the battle of Ain-Jalut).
Now I want to hear about your votes for Ancient battles! I have limited info on Chariot period battles so I will not be able to create scenarios for that period. My scenarios will be for the period of 500bce to 450ace. Please limit your suggestions to a maximum of ten suggestions and you may of course suggest less!
I will be working on 5 medieval scenarios over the next five weeks and will most likely start on ancient battles after those, unless I receive a large amount of requests for 1 battle in particular.
Cheers and thanks for the input. Now on to the votes! Here are mine:
Chaironeia 338bce,
"The Elephant Victory" 273bce,
Kynoskephalai 197bce,
Magnesia, 190bce,
Mantineia 207bce,
Chaeronia 86,bce
Orchomenus 86bce,
Bagradas 49bce,
Pharsalus 48bce,
Thapsus 46bce.

Like the choices you've given, Huaxtec, but I'd like to add Raphia, the Hydaspes, and Strasbourg as my own votes, if I may.Huaxtec15mm wrote:I have already taken votes for Medieval battles and have begun creating historical based scenarios based on your votes (see my first scenario for the battle of Ain-Jalut).

The correct term should be CE (Common Era). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Era
My choices would be
Marathon 490
Granicus 334
Magnesia 190
Hydaspes 326
The Elephant Victory 273
Tigris 363
Medway 43
Sellasia 222
Trebia 218
Argentoratum 357

"Correct" is a matter of debate in the academic community at the moment. Both AD and BC are still used along with BCE and CE. There was a movement toward BCE and CE a few years ago, but that has largely fallen out of favor. I was specifically advised when writing my Masters Thesis that using the terms "BCE" and "CE" would -not- be wise. The counter argument essentially says that the terms "BC" and "AD" are no more culturally suggestive than the regnal dating systems or "ancestral founding" based systems used in other parts of the world. It's a funny old world when a scholar from a certain country is offended by your use of "BC" and "AD", but likewise expects you to understand the dating system his native country uses, traced to the date of a first emperor or his pet frog...willb wrote:The correct term should be CE (Common Era). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Era

All very silly to me, frankly:) But that's the Social Sciences these days. Political would be putting it mildly.
Nevertheless, you will find strong proponents of both systems.
And I agree. Some great battles proposed here.

No-one mentioned Gaugamela (Arbela if you prefer)
I would also make a case for the following
Bagradas (First Punic War)
Take you pick of Hannibal/Scipio wins(and several have) but if choosing one then Zama
Ipsus - the ultimate succer clash?
Leuctra
Alesia
Pharsalus
Immae
Milvian Bridge
Catalaunian Plain
My criteria for a good scenario is that it should be close (or have the potential to be), hard fought and potentially decisive.
