Themed Event: winners post your results here . . .

Post by stockwellpete » Mon May 13, 2019 7:30 am

Please use the following format when posting your results. Be sure to indicate which qualifying group or knock-out round you were playing in, which armies were involved in the battle, and the final score of the battle. It should look very much like this . . .

Group 1

hidde (Romans) beat stockwellpete (Carthaginians) 60-46

It may seem a trivial point but please do not report the result as 46-60. It is more helpful if everyone gets used to reporting their results in the same way to avoid any confusion, particularly when an adjudication may be necessary.

Group 2 (Alexander's Conquests)

Geffalrus (Thracian Triballi) defeated MikeMarchant (Indians) 45-4 ..... good game to my opponent who was dealt some truly terrible elephant luck.

The Thracian Triballi arrived in India as an allied force within Alexander's conquering army. Splitting off to partake in the plundering of a local Hindu temple, the warbands were blocked by a large force of elephants and archers. Both sides formed up, with the Indian army adopting a thin center of elephants and archers, while weighting the wings with melee infantry, cavalry, and more archers. Screened by a mass of peltasts, the warbands charged forward and tied up the elephants just long enough for reserve units of Thracian spears to infiltrate the melee and flank the elephants. In the space of two turns of combat, 5 elephant units chain routed and sent the Indian center into flight. Sadly, most of the Thracian army died of exotic bowel ailments that were the result of over-eating local curry in the battle's aftermath.

Things start to go badly for the elephants as the Thracians activate a Zerg swarm maneuver......

Sadly, our strategy was severey undermined by a dodgy catapult salesman. He was supposed to supply us with tremendous catapults, absolutely tremendous, which would have allowed us to launch the curries into the Thracian camp on the eve of battle. Anticipating the Thracian overindulgnece with the curries, and the consequent exotic bowel movements, we'd imagined an easy stroll across the battlefield while Thracian all about waved little white flags in the form of Andrex.

We only trusted him bcause he was the leader of an elephant party, and his name reminded us of our own adorable pachyderms, but the absolutely tremendous catapults failed to arrive, and the catapult salesman was nowhere to be found. Having left our unneeded, but brave, warriors at home, we'd fielded little more than curry cooks and elephants. And it was the Thracians who Trumped us. So sad, so tremdously, tremndously sad.

Great game, Geffalrus, and one in which I was well outplayed.

Best Wishes

Mike

Group 2 (Alexander's Conquests)

Geffalrus (Thracian Triballi) defeated IMC (Macedonians) 45-15. Good game to my opponent for a well fought match.

In order to cross over to Anatolia, Alexander first needed to pacify the Thracian Tribali on his Northern flank. Battle was joined in between two large forests that protected the Thracian flanks from the Macedonian heavy horse. While the Macedonian medium foot got tied up hunting skirmishers in the forest, the Triballi were able to squeeze a few units past the battling warbands and pikes, allowing for a succession of flanking attacks. These attacks, combined with a general's death and some bad cohesion double drops, allowed the warbands to roll of the phalanx in a speedy fashion. Eager to get on with the business of conquering Asia, Alexander opted to instead marry a Triballi princess, coopt the Triballi into his army, and continue marching east. Excited by the prospect of plundering Persia with their new Macedonian friends, the Triballi raiders turned their eyes towards a new foe.......

The chaotic battle line exposes exploitable openings.

Group 3

oscarius (Pyrric) beats Morbio (Macedonian) 60 - 40.

The new cheaper Cretan archers proved a major thorn in my side decimating my left cavalry and shrugging off the fire of my own skirmishers but some energetic elephant attacks and heroic prolonged mercenary hoplite defence against multiple pikes on the right allowed my centre to make the most of terrain and seize the day. An enjoyable match that might lead me to incorporate a unit I had previously dismissed as overpriced..

Group 2 "Wars of Alexander"

Geffalrus (Thracian-Triballi) defeats XLegione (Persians) 40-15

A tense chess match from beginning to end. Thank you to my opponent for a very good game.

After crossing the Hellespont, the Triballi guarded one flank of Alexander's army as it marched towards Sardis. While the main army dealt with a Persian Satrap host at the Battle of Granicus, the Triballi confronted a Persian relief column near the coast. Protected from the Persian cavalry by the sea on one side, and a large forest on the other, the Triballi surged forward with their warbands to engage the Persian archers and Takabara foot. The lines lengthened as the Persians backpedaled furiously, but eventually, they could go no farther, and the Triballi charged, demolishing the weaker Persian infantry without much trouble. The mercenary hoplites and Persian Cavalry faced off with the Thracian spears for an awkward amount of time as neither side really wanted to risk a confrontation. As the dust from the far flank cleared, the Royal Persian statisticians concluded that the army had taken too great a losses compared to how much damage they had dealt in return. In good order, the hoplites and Cavalry retreated from the field to fight another day. The Triballi got drunk in celebration.

Takabara foot and massed archers brace for impact.......

Group 1

SnuggleBunnies (Syracusan) defeats Barrold713 (Spartan) 55-18

As usual, a far closer game than the score suggests. My left wing was under considerable strain, thanks to Barrold's superiority in skirmishers. In my center, he led a skillful and ferocious assault to take advantage of my backpedaling to avoid the psiloi-infested forest. This had created a salient holding a hill, which he pinched off and destroyed. However, my cavalry wing outnumbered his 2-1, and this proved decisive; as the bloodbath in the center continued, my horsemen, having disposed of his cavalry and ridden down some skirmishers on the way, crashed into his infantry from behind and secured a hard fought victory.

Group 4

Triarii (Thracians) beat Paul McNeil (Macedonia) 61-34.

Very very much in the balance until the collapse of the Macedonian mediums under a Thracian horde (or the bit that was left of it) while the Thracian light cavalry did a passable impersonation of pesky horseflies around the quality Macedonian cavalry.
