War Gear/Additional Infantry build diversity
Will there be a way to diversify units? i.e. in the same way we buy war gear for heroes or Research Heavy Bolters For Leman Russ Tanks...could we get the same options for say Space Marines with upgrades to Flamers? Or Terminators to Sheild an Hammers or Assault Cannons? They could work in the same manner as the Bolters on tanks as well, where the Flamers only fire when target is in the adjacent tile...etc. Is this something that can be done, or is being considered?

Re: War Gear/Additional Infantry build diversity
We don't have any current plans for this. We currently do this through the tech tree so all units on a factions side are the same. So once you get medikits all your units have them. Unless you have strong visual clues about the upgrades it could get confusing for the player using the unit and opponents. For heroes I don't mind it as they're already special case but for grunts it feels like it may be overkill.
Re: War Gear/Additional Infantry build diversity
Actually, I think it works be a great suggestion, and could add much needed variety to infantry if we were able to select load out (Heavy bolters or heavy melta, power swords or power fists for veteran assault marines)...
But it would only be reasonable if these work with the current animations.

I am only still playing as Space Marines, as I want to finish a game all the way through before moving on to the next, but I feel the above suggestion has huge merit. I am really enjoying game, and think you guys have done a great job, but as my troops level up I feel there is a missed opportunity to increase the game immersion. I want that Space Marine rookie that jut battled his way through some tough combats to feel a bit different to the one I just built. Sure he is a bit better through leveling, but maybe grenades can ONLY be added at certain levels or their armour gets a bit tougher? Maybe a banner gets added to the model? Maybe we can name them (not sure if this is a feature). I want that little Space Marine that his been through some tough scraps with me to FEEL or LOOK or ACT different than the one next door. Maybe they can get extra equipment? Not sure how this would play out with other units/armies. Would love to see something special on Dreadnoughts!
Keep up the good work

Re: War Gear/Additional Infantry build diversity
I would love to be able to upgrade my SM squads with a heavy weapon and a special weapon akin to tabletop SM Tactical Squads. Would be really nice for the Astra Militarum to do likewise. Orks Boyz could do with a Rokkit Launcha or a Big Shoota upgrade but I can't speak for Necrons as not sure what they can upgrade with on Troops choice type squads.
Re: War Gear/Additional Infantry build diversity
Yes, however research needs to be somewhat exclusive, to simulate the subfactions.
We should not be able to research all.
We should not be able to research all.
Re: War Gear/Additional Infantry build diversity
I will be honest the idea is pretty interesting... and even thought that's how the tabletop works in many regards I don't think it would be easy to do it... and even if it is easy if it would make the game any better.
I remember this same idea was something I love about Dawn of War I... being able to create a specific squad by selecting weapons was amazing. One could attach Sergeants, Apothecaries and even Leaders to the Squad and select specific weapons Flamethrower, Plasma, Bazookas, Grenades Launchers, etc. It felt so deep and rewarding that each weapon would affect a different type of enemy.
BUT this is a 4X game... and I think this is a little bit different. As said above it would be VERY hard to tell each squad appart easily. Plus it would be a lot of work to add so many different weapon models to an existing squad not to mention having to do it when we already have something similar. We already have different weapons for different types of enemies... I personally don't mind the way the devs made it. You can research different types of grenades and have THAT act as a different "type" of weapons against specific targets. It's a simple and elegant way of having the same choices but with a more practical weapon (grenades, which translates into an icon ingame... it's pretty smart on their part). I understand it's not exactly the same, after all everyone gets the grenades and what you are asking if for each squad to be unique... but it's a pretty good compromise IMHO.
I personally would have liked the Apothecary to be a +1 white Space Marine model that appears in the Squad when leveling (and granting them the "heal" ability) instead of it being a Squad on it's own. Same for Sergeants (they could be a +1 Space Marine with no helmet and a banner on the backpack). In fact, the basic Space Marine squad could have 4 Marines when leveling eventually you would get a Sergeant bringing it to 5 models and finally a Apothecary getting to 6 models in the squad and it looking amazing with a banner.
It would have look great and you could differentiate experienced Space Marine squads from the rookie Squads. That's one thing I would have like... and even though I highly doubt it will ever be implemented I think it would have look great. Not to mention it would leave a free spot for another unit... maybe a Rhino (being able to load infantry and deploying them in adyacent hexes)... could be neat.
Anyway... I am rambling
I think that would be the closes compromise we could ask for... but I doubt we would ever get different weapons when we already have different types of damage in each squad in a certain way.
Cheers
