Info sources...

Post by ChrisTofalos »

Looking for something different, and inspired by some recent battle reports by the often (but not always!) amusing Tim Porter, I've decided to have a go at FoG-R; specifically ECW (so I'm unlikely to be entering any comps!).

I'm a keen FOG-AM player, so have some idea on how the rules work and have played one game a few years back but I'm very much a newbie when it comes to Renaissance wargaming.

Is there some sort of beginners' guide to FoG-R? And exactly what is a Kiel and how does it work?

Chris,

There is no beginners guide to FOG R. In fact reading the Madaxeman's reports is, other than playing, a very good way of learning how to play.

The major differences to FOG AM are:-

1) Artillery shoots further - up to 36" for heavy artillery

2) You test for every hit with gunpowder weapons - so you can lose a lot of troops quickly

3) Mounted troops can make 3 moves rather than 2

4) Elephants are a separate classification of troops

Think of a keil as like a pike block in FOG AM but even better. It is usually bigger and often has HW wings.

Where about are you based?

Another significant difference isthat in FoG:R many units have a set BG size and, indeed, formation.

Also Bob didn'tmention that a keil charged in the flank does not count as being charged in the flank so does not suffer a cohesion loss, etc. that comes with a normal flank charge.

I picked up the bit about a Kiel not disrupting from a flank charge from one of Tim's battle reports.

However, my copies of the rules and army lists haven't arrived yet so I'm sort of stumbling in the dark. Can any army form a Kiel or is there a limitation?

Troops who may use keil are defined in the army lists - basically troops like Swiss and Landsknecht pike blocks.
