Where do archers put their stakes when defending artillery?

Post by RonanTheLibrarian »

This is a rules clarification, generated by an incident in a game at Warfare 2017, and a reminder to Nik to look at what happens when archers are defending artillery and they have defensive stakes. Do these go:-
(a) in front of the guns (on the basis that troops defending guns notionally have their bases level with the front of the gun bases);
(b) in front of the archers, but to the rear of the guns; or
(c) both, if the frontage of the archers is wider than the frontage of the guns (ie overlapping archer bases are actually level with the front of the gun bases)?

For the sake of aesthetics and so they don't get forgotten, I would place them in front of the guns (as the bow are theoretically level with the guns and move the guns back the width of the stakes as per point 3 of the the portable defences rules on page 158.
