WTF

Post by sfbaytf »

That pretty much sums it all up. Had zero interest in this. For whatever reason I decided to give it a try after seeing some of the reviews posted about it. I looked at it and then took the plunge. I never played or really had interest in VN65 either.

Once I started playing it after a little time with the tutorials I can't stop. It's frustrating for sure and even on regular I'm finding it very difficult but have to say the game is pure genius. It captures a very difficult subject in a very elegant way.

Fortunately I'm not a very early adopter so I haven't had to deal with the bugs.

If this publisher makes an updated Viet Nam game I would get it.

Any chance of something along the lines of The Global War on Terror that could include Africa and the ready of the Middle East with political events from the superpowers and other nations?

Sounds like there are DLCs planned already 8)

And agreed - I have to confess that if it weren't for the subject matter, I wouldn't have gotten interested... but I'm glad I was, because this game is a clever little gem. I'm definitely recommending it to people!

Vietnam '65 is very much worth playing if you enjoy A11's skirmish mode - but it didn't leave as much of an impression on me (even though I somehow wound up with 3 copies of it - more $$ for the development team :D ) I'd say it was a very good first run at the "Hearts and Minds" gameplay concept, but in A11 it's definitely refined and taken up a notch!

I'm having trouble winning. Not losing, but certainly not winning either. I hate it when my helos get shot up. So much to do, so little resources and the clock is ticking....

Ultimately we plan to revisit Vietnam is a fully refined and compr hensive model (Vietnam'66), but first we are going to have a few stops along the way , including the bush war in Angola and the Sovietologist invasion of Afghanistan, then take all the learnings ( there are many ) and go back to our roots with V'66

The bush war in Angola, now that's way off the beaten path for most of us. I'm a history buff and majored in a related area and admit I'm not well versed, but if its an educational experience and I can have some fun at it, then I'll buy. I remember the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan as I lived in the Middle East at the time as an expat. Going to feel funny playing the big bad Soviet war machine.

What i would really like to see is the current GWAT (Global War Against Terror) and "The World is a Battlefield" . This game engine seems very suited as a learning tool that teaches that the use of military force has its limits in today's world. It would be interesting to see cyber warfare incorporated.

I believe Johan (aka Every Single Soldier) has had personal experience of the Bush War, is that right? Which I think would make a game about it all the more interesting!

And as for future plans, oooh, that sounds awesome! I'm happy you're confirming the Soviet invasion of Aghanistan, I hope you don't mind if I share a few ideas and suggestions on that later :)

But I also agree with you sfbaytf in that there are some real interesting possibilities in the current "GWAT" scenario - although I think it'll be great to see the game engine mature a bit more to really tackle it, because while the Afghanistan/Vietnam scenarios still center largely around military logistics and a sort of "direct" approach to hearts and minds, doing justice to the current situation would require a heavy focus on intelligence and indirect involvement - e.g. funding and supporting different groups and populations with differing loyalties and agendas of their own. I think that gradually would be a fascinating game, but would probably require a lot more new features compared to evolving the current engine through a few steps - so I like the idea of building back around to V66 before going up to the next step!

A11 is only a big step froward from V65, the journey is far from complete though, ultimately want to end with a definitive COIN simulator and for that to happen a deeper dialogue with the local populations and a multi layered intel interface will evolve.

I served in the SADF in the 80's as an infantry Lt, so the Angolan conflict adaption is kinda personal....

It will not only an adaption to another conflict, but will most ceratiainly introduce new levels os gameplay that will contribute to the evolution of this model, as well as being an 'interesting' for the most of us unfamiliar with the conflict
