Changing initial Denarii
Hi gents,
In the arenasides.txt file, change the values in bold for whatever points you need to begin a campaign with:
5
Republican 0 0 50 0 4 22 2 5 15 1 0 91
Tutorial 2 0 50 0 4 22 1 5 15 -1 0 79
Gauls 1 0 50 0 4 21 1 5 15 0 0 93

Hola!! You've done it again, we'll call this one "miki2"!!
Following on from your lead, if you check out the next three numbers after the Leader's they are 2=Toga Militia, 5=Skirmisher & 15=WesternLC or Scouts. The same process works for the Gauls. So you can change them too!!!
Which means you can start with more money and a better army, what joy!! Those peasants in the early maps won't know what hit them. "Men in black" just went out of business.
What it also means is because we now have the ability to recruit all troop types within LA we can test them against all opponents and monitor the effect of different promotion and equipment choices. My "Arena" what if...! We have no restrictions, the only one is our imaginations.

I know this is 11 months late, but if anyone is interested and hasn't worked it out for themselves yet, I have some theories on what the other numbers are. These might be shown in the XLS files that are available, but I don't have anything to read them with so I thought I would post them anyway.
From the file:
The first number ("6") is the number of different sides available. This (I presume) will have to increase if you add more sides.
Name?____No._Fame_Money__?1_NoStartUnits_U1(Leader)_U2_U3__U4_UEtc____Un/LockCampaign_Hidden_?2__?3

Name? = The Name of the Side
No. = The Number of the Side
Fame/Money = Starting Fame/Money
?1 = I dunno. They are all 0, so you need a trial/error approach to find what they do.
NoStartUnits = The Number of Units, with which you start. Unknown if there is a max. 20 maybe?
U1-U4 = Unit Number 1-4. Find the relevent numbers in the unit files.
UEtc = Unit Number 5-... (rather stupid for me to put U5, U6, U7 etc)
Un/LockCampaign = Allows you to lock or unlock a campaign (meaning you have to/don't have to do the prior campaigns) -1 = Unlocked, 0 = Locked.
Hidden = Stops the campaign appearing in the menu. Cheat is hidden by default meaning you don't see it as it has all units. -1 = Hidden, 0 = Visible
?2/?3 = Not sure what these do, but I believe they are linked to which army, or campaign you play.
With ?2, both Roman sides are 91, both celtic sides are 93, the starting campaign is 79, and cheat is -1. However, changing them doesn't appear to have any effect on them.
It is possible to add new sides in. Adding one extra will create a button for it next to the Celtic image. However, LA crashes whenever I finish the opening cinematic.
Just curious if anyone knows anymore about these numbers.

It's not too user friendly so it's hard to say whether things would work if you add a new side without trying it. It may require new data in places that are not obvious - e.g. UI files. Unfortunately it's not something we can really support as the system was never designed for others to use, so if it works great, if not there is not much we can do.

Is the "?1" another resource which wasn't implemented but is still there? I saw on the unit descriptions that you still have numbers for wood/gold/food/etc which I presume are left over from Legion? Are you able to tell me what the last 2 numbers change? I've been messing around changing them, but they don't have any effect that I've seen so far.

if you go to the downloads section of www.microsoft.com, there's a program called XL viewer, or Excel viewer. One odd little quirk of the XL viewer is that sometimes it chokes when you just doubleclick on the .xls file, and then you have to actually do the file open thing from within the viewer program. But it does work, and it's free.

change on MAC
does anyone know how to make changes on MAC version of this game? Also, does anybody have a strategic hint that i might use on "Cypsela" battlefield? no matter how i do, i just cannot do it under 150 minutes.

It's been such a long time since I played Legion Arena and was wondering if there was a completed Mod available? At the moment my time is spent on Roma Surrectum but would love to try any mod on Arena which when I got it had many possibilities but nothing as regards mods.
If Ian reads this he might remember me as I was about the oldest player of Legion and then Arena, 60 to be exact, but now being 70, I still have an appetite for anything Rome. We just bought The Birth of Rome but it doesn't look that good nor that easy to figure out, certainly not as good as the two mentioned. Anyway how is that baby coming on, must be ten now?

if you like Rome and have an iPad we have Legion coming to iPad in the next couple of weeks. We have submitted to Apple and it will be released as soon as its ready!

As I already have Legion from many years past is there any difference from that version? I thought then and still think it is a great game, perhaps the only thing needing altered being the figures themselves to a more realistic look like in Arena which I have also got. By the way I just bought Birth of Rome and as yet am not impressed at all. Too footery.
