What is the "Units" folder and its contents used for?

I've finally gotten to the point where i can't finish my mod without creating new unit models, or in actuality modifying already present models. I don't understand the use of the file "Units" and its contents. What do they do? I don't know. If one could enlighten me to their usage, that would be be appreciated.
