Hi all. Does anyone have a source of an online list of armies that shows who fought who during the period from roughly 1500 till 1700?
I'm unable to find one, and my financial resources are rather slim for purchasing any in the foreseeable near term.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Alex

Re: Renaissance Army Lists
information on various renaissance armies (from old wargaming magazine). Fun read but some info may not be the most up to date:
http://warfare.cf/Renaissance/Renaissan ... ticles.htm
Next up Miniatures Page gets the big conflicts for Europe in a list...some details but a bit incomplete:
http://theminiaturespage.com/ref/history/reninfo.html
List of European wars on Wikipedia (yeah, my history professors always said not to cite Wikipedia but to get a sense of who fought who it is not a bad starting place):
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_1500–1799
Specific to this period above
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of ... _in_Europe
Look at 16th, 17th, 18th Centuries in a more general list
Also see William Michael‘s post on a different Wikipedia list with similar info presented in a different way:
viewtopic.php?f=299&t=68295&sid=726e0cb ... 13afdfc80f
Blog with very detailed charts of some Early Modern Wars (search for timelines to find more then just the Italian wars one):
https://jostwald.wordpress.com/2013/01/ ... seen-them/
Key to his symbols:

A bit tricky to parse if not well read on the conflicts in question though because he uses a good deal of shorthand/icons in the charts.

Re: Renaissance Army Lists
I have some books with a timeline or two that might help too. Depending on what is is specifically you are looking for. Anyways above are the few easily accessible resources that come immediately to mind.

If you can manage to find it and want a relatively recent book with a broad global context for warfare in this period try to see if a library (at a university/college/town) near you has a copy of: War and Conflict in the Early Modern World: 1500 - 1700 by Brian Sandberg

Re: Renaissance Army Lists
There are perhaps shorter more euro focused and less dense treatments but your post made it sound like you were looking for something with a global scope and survey style.

Looks like a good candidate for the 'Stickies' thread
