New Period(s), New Releases?

Post by Bombax »

Just wondering if there's been any word on new periods or new releases for the P&S game engine? I haven't checked the forum properly for a while, and I'm quite surprised that there seems to be no info about where RBS is going next with this excellent game...

This news - as understandably vaporous as it is - is wonderful. Glad you decided to go back in time. Whenever, wherever will be interesting. There are enough games from the Age of Napoleon forward. What made P & S so interesting was it's rarely-treated subject matter. The same will be true no matter how far you go back. Look forward to news when news is deemed appropriate...

I really was hoping for a XVIII century standalone game.

Not very interested in medieval warfare, I'd prefer a Greek/Roman setting. Alexander's battles would be great with this game engine. Well, we'll see. :)

Its really strange but it seems designers avoid the 18 century. Maybe the interest of people is not really much for this and designers have a fear they cant sell a lot.
But in the end i"m happy they made "Pike and shot " and not one more of this stupid ww2 games instead.
And in the end i have some older 18 century wargames i play a lot. Ok the graphic is old but it really doesent matters for me.
And some of the scenariodesigners here already made 1800 scenarios, maybe more will come.
I would do some but i must confess after designing hundreds of scenarios for peoples general my designing enthusyasm starts to fade and i dont have the power to learn designing for Pike and shot.

It could turn out to be Ancient instead of - or as well as - Medieval... After all, Richard just said "Backwards in time". I'd love an Ancients version!!! :D

Backwards in time is good enough for me. But I must own a preference for medieval because it is potentially such a wide net. The War the Roses, the Crusades, the 100 Years War, Bannockburn, etc.A good engine for that period could take in everything from the Dark Ages through the Norman Conquest and right up to Towton. That's a lot of potential.

I do feel a little silly, implicitly trying to lobby a matter that is already decided. Too anxious, I guess.

It will be what it will be, and if it is as modder-friendly and fun to play, put me down for one right now...

Me too.

I would also like a game for the Napoleonic period.

for the napoleonic, in my opinion, this should be done with a little mod for P&S.

Considering the miniature wargame called "Blucher" by sam mustafa it is possible to avoid infantry formations in a "grand tactical" napoleonic game, thus using a full brigade as a single base, this might avoid considering line, column and square; but this should be made just considering a Fragmented infantry unable to form square and a steady infantry quite difficult to be routed by a cavalry (simulating the forming of a square)

This is a good idea; the representation of Brigade-sized units enables the designer to create lare scale battles (especially considering large OOBs and vast maps). Odenathus successfully did this to recreate Blenheim 1704.

Something that needs to get used to, but it works!

My vote would be 1) Medieval back to Norman Conquest era 2) Dark Ages then followed by 3) Classical Ancients.

I think the game mechanism is quite suitable, with some tweaks, for all of these periods. I think one tweak should be the incorporation of generals, as they tended to fight and die in the front ranks.

In my opinion, this is certainly a better platform than that used in Field of Glory, although when it first came out, it was lots of fun. It has not aged well and the upgrade does not seem to be any better, although I have not been disposed to try it.

Any possibility of an early 'Christmas' present?

Another clue as to what's next and when; with somewhat less broad-based hints.

Ahh, Romans!

The Carthaginian wars; the Punic wars. Lots of possibilities.

Thanks, Richard, very pleased with that.
