Battle Music

Post by Pixel »

I like the in game music but sometimes it gets repetitive. Therefore I usually end up putting something like this on when playing P&S: http://youtu.be/8pLL_ASDl5k.

Does anyone else here have recommendations on good battle music? :)

I can't thank all of you enough for these posts.

I don't use a handheld device, so downloading and converting a Youtube video was not something that would have naturally occurred to me to do.

Because of your posts I have entered the 21rst century, and my game's music folder has entered the 17th.

My favorite intro theme music for a game like this would probably be Rodrigo Martinez (the grand-daddy of all the La Folia variations), but for some reason the percussion in the Jordi Savall version of it has always struck me as oddly and annoyingly weak. I guess that's what happens when you've spent too much time hanging out with Haitian vodoun drummers. King's Singers did a pretty nice version of it, but it doesn't seem to be online.

That's one of my favourite early folías too! (although I actually do prefer Savall's version  ). Speaking of which, I always pictured Savall's "Guerre & Paix au temps du Baroque en Europe" live concert as a perfect musical companion to the game, at least for the TYW/ECW campaigns (sadly, somebody erased the full performance from YouTube).

Sorry if this went a litle off-topic; but I wonder if many of the fellow Pike & Shot gamers are also early music fans, that would be amazing!

¡Saludos!

Some other Early Music youtube channels that may be of interest. Although some of them tend towards 18th and 19th century pieces which end up being a later then the the period covered by Pike and Shot.

With the possible exception of spending a weekend camping with Pike-and-Shot era reenactors...I find that few things transport my imagination into the era than some rousing music from that period.

Even realizing that you can find virtually anything on the Internet, I really had no concept that I might find videos for original Landsknecht marching songs on YouTube! That is, until the day that I was researching some truly fantastic Napoleonic French marches...which led me to Napoleonic Prussian Marches, and from there backward in time through the days of Frederick the Great to the 17th and 16th centuries.

Not only are these two interesting, rousing songs from the era, but the imagery in the videos gives us some nice visuals of troops familiar from the game!
The scenes in the videos are taken from movies (not sure which ones, sorry!) Hollywood hasn't exactly produced a wide selection of Pike & Shot movies, but the time period is popular with production companies in some European nations. I know that the Polish are quite proud of their forebear's Winged Hussars, and have made a number of films celebrating their martial prowess, including at least one that I've watched scenes from that deals with the Swedish Invasion. If you're interested, just try searching YouTube and you'll undoubtedly find them.

In the meantime...I hope you enjoy these!

"Unser Liebe Fraue" (Our Beloved Lady)

"Trum, trum, terum tum tum" (Drums, Drums, Drumming the Drums) (some nice black-armored Cavalry at the end. "Schwarze Reiters"? Kuirassiers?)

Sad and beautiful:

Sad, joyless Spain

Sad, joyless Spain,
everyone should weep for you.
Barren, devoid of happiness
that shall never return.

Storms, sorrows, pains
came and took residence in you.
God sowed pleasures in you
so pains would grow.

He made you happier
so as to better hurt you.
Your victories and achievements
you had to pay dearly.

Since you keep sustaining such losses,
tell me, what should you ever win?
you lose the light of your glory
and the joy of being joyful.

You lose all your hope,
and are left with nothing to hope for,
you lose Pritan, up high,
the son of peerless kings.

Cry, cry, for you lost
he who was to sing your praises.
In his tender youth
God saw fit to take him.

He took all good away from you,
and left you with his longing,
so you could die, so you could pine,
with no end to your grieving.

Of such a pitiful sadness
hope not to ever gain relief.
