Final Army Composition; Purchase Order; Training

Post by pgeerkens »

So you know whereof I speak - my most recent run through THC-GBoR finished with a final prestige of 1,145,610:

Purchase Order of troops (disband initial Militia and Skirmishers):
Defiant Framers - Scouts
Aequi Raiders - Spearmen
variable. before Men in Black - Skirmishers * 2
Conclude the War - Velites * 2
Battle of Lautulae - Principes
Samnites - Triarii
Battle Of Heraclea - Legionary
Battle of Adys - Auxilia
Battle of Trebbia - Auxiliary Cavalry
Battle of Dertosia - Auxiliary Archer * 2

Skills training for Missilers:
1) Marksmen
2) Other bulls-eye skills
3) Disciplined Formations
4) Drill
5) Missile Protection
6) Endurance
Sometimes I train one Velite in Anti-Infantry instead of Missile Protection, jut for fun.

Skills training for Triarii:
1) Swordsman
2) Stand Firm
3) Anti-Cavalry Specialist
4) Endurance
5) Protection From Cavalry

Skills training for Spearmen (who must double as anti-cavalry until Triarii are available):
1) Disciplined Formations
2) Swordsman
3) Armor Penetration - one or two levels only
4) Anti-infantry Specialist
5) Endurance
6) Protection from Infantry

Skills training for other infantry (all as anti-infantry):
1) Disciplined Formations
2) Expert Throwers
3) Swordsman
4) Protection from Infantry (only after about Level 12 or 13)
5) Endurance
6) Anti-Infantry Specialist

Skills training for Cavalry (as anti-infantry):
1) Trample
2) Frenzy
3) Swordsman
4) Protection from Infantry (only after about Level 13)
5) Anti-Infantry Specialist
6) Endurance

I have not experimented with training Cavalry as anti-cavalry (the way Julius Caesar used them), but I expect it would look similar to the above with Protection from Cavalry and Anti-Cavalry Specialist substituted above in the obvious location. (I expect that Scouts would be unsuitable for this role, however.) In battles such as 2nd Macedonian War, where a second anti-cavalry unit is required, I have been able to use my Auxiliary Cavalry, backed up by a Skirmisher and my leader and on a terrain advantage, to good effect. Sometime the Skirmisher is even unnecessary.

Attn: Slitherine Support

I have the 68 save files for the campaign run-through referred to above, with losses replenished for my keeper army but not my pin-cushions, available. Is Slitherine interested in posting it here for reference? That might be a useful tutorial resource for new players, as they could play any scenario with my keeper army and try to best my individual battle results.
