Game won't launch with v1.6.0

Hello Support,

I purchased this game yesterday via Steam, downloaded it, played for a while and had fun.

Today, after work, I came home and started it up. Steam automatically downloaded the update to v1.6.0. However, now the game won't launch at all. See the attached screenshot...the game stalls at the launcher pop-up box. It's a bit frustrating that it was operating fine yesterday but an update has since broken it.

Hi,

Please right-click on the game in your Steam Library, select Properties, then Local Files tab, and click on Verify Integrity of Game Cache, and see if any files need re-downloading.

I actually did try that before. It told me one file needed to be replaced, which was automatically downloaded. When I launched the game afterwards, it still froze at the launcher.

At that point, I uninstalled the entire game and re-installed it. But the game still froze at the launcher.

It is at this point when I posted the message above.

Just now, as you suggested, I ran the integrity verification again and it says everything is good, but the game still freezes at the launcher.

Hello bigboom,

Sorry to hear you're having issues with the game. Another two players reported a similar problem in the Steam forums, but one of them said the problem went away after rebooting the computer. Slitherine will continue investigating what's going on with the launcher but, in the meantime, you can play the game by running the exe directly. See my post here.

I've tried opening the exe directly via the steam "browse local files" and also via windows explorer. In both cases, it still does not work. When I try to do this, nothing happens except that the mouse arrow gets the little circular "thinking" or "processing" symbol next to it. But the symbol never goes away and the exe never actually starts the game.

This is pretty much the same thing as what happens when I try to use the launcher. The game just never starts.

Does opening the exe start up some kind of background process or task that I can view via the task manager? What's the name of it? Or perhaps it is conflicting with some other process or task?

Sounds like the same problem as hmstomahawk on the Steam forums.

Unfortunately sometimes steam gets its files corrupt on one of its servers or all. These problems usually just disappear after a day or so. Can you retry today and see if it is working? Sorry for any inconvenience. It all works fine here which is why we suspect some download/server issue.

Trying again did not work. However, I tried what hmstomahawk did. I installed it and used steam to re-installed on a different drive (I originally had it installed on the C drive). When I did this, the game started up okay.

This leads me to think that the C drive installation left some artifact files that remain even after uninstalling. And when re-installed on C, those artifacts prevented the entire game from operating.

Perhaps with this information, your team can narrow down further the cause of the problem. Thanks for your attempts at assisting and good luck with hunting down the problem!
