FOGN Tournament in Melbourne, July 18th and 19th

Post by Tyler »

FIELD OF GLORY NAPOLEONIC VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

July 18th and 19th

At Club Tivoli, 291 Dandenong Road, Windsor, Victoria

The League of Ancients wargaming club will be hosting the Field of Glory Napoleonic Victorian Championship on the 18th and 19th of July this year.

The tournament will be scenario based, with preset terrain modeled on historical battles. The scenarios are available for download in advance from http://www.leagueofancients.org.au. There will be four rounds, two per day.

Players will need two lists, one 650 points and one 800 points, both chosen from the same list and period. Loan armies are available. Lists to be submitted to the umpire by 28th June at richard.gordon@simplot.com.au.

Entrance fee $30, or $15 if only playing one day. The tournament will begin at 9:30am each day.

Last year we had a great turnout, with 20+ players, some of them coming from as far as New Zealand! We hope to see plenty of interstate and international players again this year.

For more info, post questions here, or on the League of Ancients forum at http://www.leagueofancients.org.au

There'll be eight of us from NZ attending this year, the same 7 from last year plus 1 more new player.
Looking forward to it!

Hi Tyler,

Where on the League Forum are the scenarios? I downloaded some last year but can't remember where from. I figure there may be some changes or even new scenarios for this year.

Hey Geoff. Sorry, that wasn't super clear of me. They're on our website, not the forum. The forum is part of the website, but 90% of people bookmark that and go straight to it, skipping the rest of the site, so of course you wouldn't see them.

The specific page is here: http://www.leagueofancients.org.au/Gaming.aspx

If you scroll down to the Napoleonics section, you'll find the download link in the text.

So far the scenarios haven't changed from last year. If we update anything, I'll post about it here. And of course we'll email up to date copies of the scenarios to any players who enter, in order to allow everyone practice games in advance if they wish.

There will be one or two tweaks to some of these to improve balance or clarity. Also trying out a couple of new ones too. All will be published.

This year's event may be even bigger than last year's 25 entrants. Will the Kiwis take all the silverware again...? 8)

I have emailed out the scenarios to everyone on my mailing list and have already received about 15 entries with army lists and it's not even July yet! Clealry going to be another great tournament.

Anyone not on my mailing list who's interested in getting the scenarios, send me your details. Also, anyone keen to play but without an army, let me know. I'm sure we can find you a loan army.

Glad to see the Saxons from 1809 in there! I ran that army last time in the never-ending battles with deadtorius. I was surprised at how good it was! Bring in a Wurttemberg division and the army can have 3 guard units plus the Saxon cuirassiers. The guard units being spread out instead of all clumped in one division was perhaps unique? And unreformed guard infantry at that (for the Saxons)! It was nice to run!

A hotly contested comp after day one with only 4 players unbeaten - 2 Aussies and 2 Kiwis (not that the South African umpire has a bias!). Anyone's to win...!

3. Alex 46
4. Brett 43

Well a great weekend of blood and mayhem but where they only genuinely life-threatening decisions were about what to have for lunch (not that the food at Tivoli is bad, but who knows, you may have got a bad bit of chicken...?).

Anyway, it was another great turnout with all in all 23 people playing over the 2 days. This year the Kiwis performed strongly again, but this time did not take all the honours. Well done to Keith who emerged as winner with a clean sweep of victories, giving up only 4 points over the 4 days. Dave and Brett took 2nd and 3rd via a tie-break with fewer than 10 points in the difference between their 4 opponents. Credit to Jared who in his first FOG N tournament, and with only a handful of games under his belt, managed a top 10 finish. Also a big well done to Mick who took the Sportsmanship award for the great manner if which he played his games, taking some pretty dire siutations with really good grace.

But well done to everyone who played and a special thanks to the out of towners from NZ and NSW. Hopefully next year will be even bigger. I'll be giving all the scenarios a refresh now that they are battle tested over two tournaments, so next year's games will have a new look and feel. Anyone who wants to send ideas for scenarios or comments on improvements to the currrent ones, please feel free to mail me.

Top 10 places for the tournament are below (I'll send out these 10 army lists to my normal mailing list)
1. Keith 96 points
2. Dave 74
3. Brett 74
4. Robert 66
5. John 61
6. Alex 60
7. Mike 58
8. Richard S 51
9. Kendall 49
10. Jared 47

Sorry Geoff, not sure how that slipped through! In fact on my records you got 55 points and came 8th. Put it down to the drugs I was using to fight off the affects of my flu. Great to have had you along. Hope you caught your flight okay.

No worries Richard. You were quite crook that's for sure. Tough effort to be there and run the comp so well.
Yep, made my flight just fine :)
