This came up in our Nationals:
aa
xx
y
y
"x" and "y" are friendly units; "x" faces up the page, "y" is facing to the right and its front edge is slightly to the left of the right hand edge of "x". So, if "y" wheels 90 degrees to face up the page then its front left corner is behind the rear edge of "x".
Unit Y declares it is charging enemy unit A. Having wheeled 90 degrees to line up Unit A, can Unit Y now slide (up to) 1 base width to avoid Unit X ??
sliding a base width during an assault move ?

Re: sliding a base width during an assault move ?
I don't see why not. A unit may slide up to a base width.
Requirements of a charge:
-(p. 28)be able to see target
-make a normal advance move that will contact the target
Allowed slides up to a base width:
-(p. 38) forward moves that starts or ends within 6MU...cannot start but may end within 2MU
So, as long as the charging unit is not within 2MU of its target, it can slide a base width during a charge.

You can also slide the minimum required (up to a base width) to get around blocking friends as part of a normal move.
This came up in our recent Natcon tournament. Lots of views, no consensus.
Is Terry still out there somewhere?
If so his comments on this would be welcome.
Cheers

It would seem that we are on our own now. Sometimes things come up that keep us away. Hope everything is okay with everyone.
I suppose, like the 'shooting from buildings at infantry' question, we'd never get a consensus among ourselves. It just says that the unit has to be able to reach the target using a normal move and that can include a minimum slide.

Re: sliding a base width during an assault move ?
Problem comes in when you look at both charge restrictions and the CMT to charge through friends. The CMT would seem to imply no slide you have to go through them. Wheeling restrictions during a charge, you can't wheel so thst less of the target is to your front, nor can you wheel so your center passes the targets center. A slide would possibly allow one or the other or both things to happen. When sliding you bring less of the enemy to your front. If you were lined up then the slide could end up crossing centers, two things you can't do in a wheel when charging.
so you will allow it for one but not the other and eliminate the possibility of a failed CMT.
In our games we don't allow slides. If there are friends in the way, roll the dice and see if you're going to go through or not.
No consensus I guess.....

Re: sliding a base width during an assault move ?
The requirement for a slide within 6 MU is to only avoid friends with a minimum distance slid.
You can argue whether this can be done in a charge because it is discussed in the movement section.
Any other slide can't come closer than 2MU excluding an assault.

Re: sliding a base width during an assault move ?
Terry had posted elsewhere the answer is no slide. A charge is not a normal move so the slide does not apply to it.
No slides while charging
No slides while charging
