CEAW 4.0 final PC version download

Post by Peter Stauffenberg »

Here is the link to the CEAW GS 4.0 final PC version:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/rdibammuc0mmt ... 9.rar?dl=0

This should be installed directly on top of where you have Vanilla CEAW or GS v3.10 installed.

If you have played GS v4.0 already (earlier version released quite a few months ago) the you need to delete the following files in:
.../Documents/CEAW Grand Strategy 4.00

gs400_settings.txt

.../Documents/CEAW Grand Strategy 4.00/data/scenario

All scenario files ending With file type data. It's most likely 1939.data to 1944.data.

---/Documents means for example in Windows 10. It can be different from PC to PC.

C:/Users/<user ID>/One Drive/Documents/

Change log will be posted later by Pk867.

When you first start the game you get a few New questions.

One is the Graphics resolution. Pick the resolution that suits your resolution the most.
If you can show 1920x1080 then you pick that resolution. If you have a wide screen monitor With lower resolution the you pick 1344x768. If you have an old 4:3 format monitor then you pick 1024x768 as before.

You will also be asked whether you want to run GS v4.0 windowed or fullscreen. GS v4.0 now supports windowed mode so if you want the game to run while you move to other Windows then you pick windowed mode.

The next question is whether you want Automatic or Manual PBEM passwords. If you pick Manual then the game will ask for passwords as before. If you pick Automatic then the game will create a unique password for you based upon your PC or MAC settings. You won't be asked for password when you login to Your games. However, if you open Your game on a different PC or MAC then you won't be able to open the game at all. Please notice that if you change the password mode while having ongoing games going then you might be locked out of Your existing games. So choose carefully.

MAC users With High Sierra OS must pick Automatic password because the Java function which asks for passwords doesn't work in High Sierra.

The last question you will be asked is whether you want to show naval unit names or not. No means the naval units on the map when you start will be numbered. Yes means they will have a name of a unique naval unit for CV and BB units.

You will also notice that when you pick scenarios you have 2 Versions for each year. 1939.scn and 1939-named.scn for example. The former Version is the Version you're already familiar With. the ones ending With -named means CV's and BB's are given unique names. E. g. Gneisenau, Nelson, Ranger and so on.

Please don't hesitate to create threads in the general discussion forum asking questions about how this and that works in GS v4.0. As I mentioned before the change log will be posted soon.

Main differences are:
* Support for 3 graphics resolutions and windowed mode

* Lots of changes on the map including wide river as a new terrain type. Only used for Dnepr and Volga. Forest hills added as terrain type as well. They work exactly like hills, but they are considered forested. See below for details.

* Added rules where covered hexes like swamp, forest and forest hills have some protection against airstrikes. Air values are halved against ground units in covered terrain.

* Wide rivers can't be crossed by vehicles unless the river is frozen. Leg units can enter wide rivers, but the movement cost is similar to swamp.

* Lakes added as a terrain type which can freeze during the Winter. While frozen leg units can enter the hexes. Supply can also be traced across the frozen lake. This will have impact on e. g. Leningrad.

* Changes to Research so you advance faster if you're behind a Tech Level or more than the most Advanced major Power. The more Tech Levels behind you are the faster you advance. This simulates espionage and learning from what other major Powers have developed.

* Restricted rail movement per turn to rail depots (1), cities (2). Railcap cities and capitals have higher limits

* Restriction to overuse of rail and naval cap. You can't do another overuse if already overused.

* Restriction to PP spending. You can't spend PP's on anything if already in debt.

* Changed supply rules in North Africa and the Middle East. Now supply is max 4 around capitals. 3 around cities and rail depots. 2 around supply depots. 1 elsewhere unless out of supply.

* Supply depots are added as a new terrain type with a supply level of 2. Mostly used in North Africa and the Middle East. You can't rail units to supply depots.

* Possible to place New units on major Power islands like Northern Ireland, Sicily and Sardinia.

* New unit types added: Cavalry corps, motorised corps and mountain corps.

* New unit type for USSR called Shock corps. They behave like regular corps, but have better stats particularly in shock attack. USSR can have up to 5 shock armies. You see the icon as a corps unit With Katyusha rocket artillery. The game will automatically pick a shock army if you build a corps unit and are below the max of 5. The shock army capability is opened in October 1941 when USSR receive shock armies as reinforcements.

* New resource types added: Fortified city, fortified capital, fortifications. This was mainly done to simulate fortified positions without having to use the fortress terrain type. Now only the Maginot line, Ebel Emael in Liege and Sevastopol are fortresses. Fortifications are more lightly protected than fortresses

* Changed all old fortress hexes to fortifications or fortified cities like Gibraltar, Malta, Scapa Flow, Siegfried line, Ostwall, Gustav Line, Mannerheim line etc.

* Added new fortification lines like the Stalin line and the Mozhaiysk line.

* Commanders are now awarded for free where some Commanders awarded each year. You can see under Production which year a Commander will arrive. You can purchase a commander ahead of time if you want to spend PP's instead of waiting.

* Commander stats are changed. The most typical change is that the command range is lower than before. This is set to simulate the number of corps units the Commander actually commanded in the real war. Corps Commander has range of 0, army Commander has 1, panzer Group has 2, Army Group has 2, 3 or 4. Similar settings for USSR. Leader quality and command range is now shown on the map within blue or red circles.

* Added a new NATO counter type called Retro. This can be selected in Options. They look like large counters, but without stat numbers and are slightly larger. Air counters use old style NATO images of air units instead of air unit silhouettes and so on.

I have 3.1 installed, but I'm not sure how to update to CEAW 4.0 Final PC version. When I try to extract to C: Program Files(X86)/Slitherine/Commander at War, I get a message saying that the folder is not writable and to try another folder. Can I extract the files and then copy and paste? Any help would be appreciated. I like this game and appreciate all the work to update the game.

Thanks for all your hard work. The game and changes look great!
One question: if you want to switch the initial settings you select when you first run the game for full screen versus windows mode, how would you do that? I initially selected fullscreen but want to check out windows mode. I assumed I could change the GS400_settings file but that doesn't seem to have any effect. I changed WINDOWS_MODE and WINDOWS_MODE_SELECTED from "0" to "1."

It's the My Documents GS 4.00 settings file that you have to modify.

If you change the gs400_settings.txt under the main installation folder you change the defaults if you decide to remove the gs400_settings.txt under the documents.... folder structure. Then you can reset everything.

Another way of turning windowed mode on and off is via the Options menu.

Hi:
Came back to the game after the 4.0, however, would like to change the graphics.
Display in the options menu does not seem to work.
Can you provide a more detailed how-to.
Thx.

That latest version is 4.029 or just 4.0? Sorry if that question seems silly...

The final version is 4.0 if you see 4.029 it is the one and the same.

The easiest way to do this is to either delete the GS400_settings.txt file in Documents\CEAW Grand Strategy v400 folder

Or go into gs400_settings.txt in the same folder and open the file:
Here you find a setting called:
HIGH_RESOLUTION

If the value is 0 then you get 1024x768
If the value is 1 then you get 1920x1080
If the value is 2 then you get 1366x768
If the value is above 2 then you get asked to change the resolution the next time you start the game

Another value further down is
WINDOWED_MODE

If the value is 0 then you have fullscreen mode
If the value is 1 then you have windowed mode

Just make sure you don't alter the gs400_settings.txt file in the main game folder. That one contains the defaults and will be copied if you decide to delete the one in the Documents\CEAW Grand Strategy v400 folder.

Thx, got it.
User error actually.
I was not thinking "My Documents", but figured it out.
Thx, again.

What about removing the names on the units, if possible?

You can either uncheck unit names in the Options or set
SHOW_UNIT_NAMES to 0

Is there any way to return to the opening settings page to change the screen resolution/PBEM password after the first time you start the game? I don't see anyway to do that now.

You can remove the GS400_settings.txt file in c:\users\userID\Documents\CEAW Grand Strategy 4.00 folder

Then the game will use the default GS400_settings.txt file in the game installation folder. This allows you to select again all settings.
