I totally don't get the dice camera

I totally don't get the dice camera

What is it supposed to do and how to I use it? I just see a black box.

The idea is you point the camera at a surface. You then roll dice on that surface and the camera reads them in and converts them to real die rolls which the game uses, instead of rolling the dice with its random number generator. Its very cool :)
