Grand Discussion Part 2

Post by braccada »

We are talking about the historical background of the Polish campaign and Lt. Joker is providing an interactive map showing the front line day by day. That allows comparison with missions and maps in PanzerCorps and makes the Polish and German strategy and the broader picture a lot clearer.

Other topics are

- Defense options in Piatek
- Game mechanics: How differnt unit types interact with terrain and why putting infantry in rough terrain and tanks into the open is not always the best.
- Historical divison layout and how to represent that in the game
- Q&A

Oslo

Post by braccada »

9 April 1940 - Operation Weserübung, our pre-emptive invasion of Norway, has begun! All along the Norwegian coast, simultaneous naval and airborne operations are taking place, aimed at securing Norway against Allied intervention. My first task is to secure the city of Oslo and the surrounding area to pave the way for an inland advance. Several ships of the Krriegsmarine have been placed at my disposal to assist in this operation, but we have received urgent communications from KMS Blücher, that she is trapped by naval mines and under heavy fire from Norwegian shore batteries. If possible, I must save the KMS Blücher by silencing the guns of the Oscarsborg!

Lilehammer

Post by braccada »

14 April 1940 - Britain and France have developed siginificant forces in Norway to occupy it for themselves, clearly proving our intelligence correct and justifying our pre-emptive strike! The time has come to remove their intrusion from this country once and for all. My objective is to secure the city of Lilehammer and the surrounding area. I should expect British forces to either already be in Lilehammer or arriving from the north to reinforce it, so I have to be prepared for organized resistance.

Narvik

Post by braccada »

19 April 1940 - The combined British and French forces have successfully ousted our initial landing forces from the port of Narvik and they look set to hold their ground. Their presesence here continues to jeopardize our ore trade with Sweden and must be dealt with swiftly! My objective is to seize control of Narvik and the surrounding fjords as quickly as possible. I should be to count on assistance from the initial landing force. Although they have been forced into the hills and are somewhat low on supply, their commander is sure his men stand ready to aid my assault on Narvik. The battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau have been placed at my disposal to deal with any Allied naval force that may attempt to interfere with my operation. Intelligence has reported several major British naval assets in the area, including the aircraft carrier Glorious, and it would be a great boon to future campaigns if I would sink this vessel and any escorts I encounter.

Grand Discussion Part 3

Post by braccada »

We are talking about the historical and political background of Operation Weserübung and the implications that could have had on the outcome of the war. Using an interactive map we visulaize the strategic plans of Axis and Allied forces and compare the actual strategic and tactical situation with the maps in Panzer Corps. Turns out the Norway Map of the Vanilla campaign is pretty well made and surprisingly accurate.

Other topics are

- Short recap of our Operation Weserübung in the game
- Game mechanics: What is the best German infantry type? Pros and cons, comparison of performance and rugged defense
- More details about the infamous Neubaufahrzeug
- Q&A

I am 4 hours into this conversation and really enjoying it...they go into a super deep dive into the different infantry units around the 2hour 27 minute mark

I have some serious thoughts on this and will open up thread on main page...but those who love history and the deep dive on this great game enjoy the discussion

Eben-Emael

Post by braccada »

10 May 1940 - My new assignment will be to take the war to our old enemy France, who has dared to declare war upon us as of last September! I am to seize control of Eben-Emael during a special operation. This fortress is believed to be immune to traditional assaults, so we have set up a secret airborne operation aimed at taking Eben-Emael by surprise! The majority of my forces will be deployed on the east bank of the Meuse River, but several of my units will be dropped directly on top of the Belgian fort complex. I have to choose these advance units wisely as the element of suprise will not last long, and I want to inflict maximum damage before the defenders come to their senses and react. Moreover advance reconnaissance units have detected significant fortifications along all other crossings of the Meuse River, and it seems advisable to bypass these strong points by focusing my efforts on Eben-Emael. Once I have captured Eben-Emael, I must break through the Belgian and Dutch lines to secure the rest of my objectives, including Liege and Maastricht, which should be vulnerable to attack from the rear.

Albert Canal

Post by braccada »

11 May 1940 - Control of the recently completed Albert Canal is critical to our advance through the Low Countries. High Command knows this, but so do our enemies! My objective is to secure all crossings on the Albert Canal on our path towards Antwerp. However I have to expect counter-attacks from newly mobilized French, British, Belgian and Dutch forces, but their efforts should be fairly sporadic and uncoordinated.

The Hague

Post by braccada »

13 May 1940 - The Hague, seat of government of the Dutch nation, was supposed to be neutralized three days ago by an advance airborne operation. This is not the case. Not only our forces failed to capture the Dutch Queen and force a surrender, but now they are in danger of being wiped out completely by advancing Allied troops! My objective is to succeed where they have failed, to secure The Hague and the surrounding objectives to force the Dutch to surrender. If at all possible, I will link up with and protect any surviving auxiliary German forces I encounter. Their survival would do much to bolster my prestige in the eyes of High Command!

Hey everyone!!!!

BIG NEWS!!!

The boys are getting together in like 13 hours from this post to discuss the game again and have one of their Grand Discussions.

This is must see viewing in my opinion, I will have just finished lunch and be primed and ready for what they got to cover.

Hope you can make it.

I only have an hour or maybe an hour and a half before I have to go to an Organ recital at a church, for this afternoon dedication, but I am going to try to make the most of it, before I listen to the whole thing at work, probably a couple of times...such good stuff.

Sedan

Post by braccada »

15 May 1940 - The time has come to finally strike at France. While their forces scramble north towards the Low Countries or sit idly in the forts of their vaunted Maginot Line, we will strike where they least expect it; through the Addennes Forest at Sedan! My mission is to force my way across the Meuse River and seize our objectives. We are aware that there are powerful fortifications present in the northwest around Charleville-Mezieres, but we should be able to bypass them completely by ferrying my forces across the Meuse River to strike at Sedan from multiple directions. Once we occupy Sedan, we are to complete the breakthrough and drive our forces to the southwest with all due haste!
