Erik - 1941 DLC

Post by Erik2 »

Campaign level: General

1 - Belgrade
Prestige start: 3000
Prestige end: 3284
Units bought at start: 1x BF110D, 1x Sturmpanzer

Give the Romanian officers historical General names, make them worth saving.
Captured all objectives and flags by turn-14 and got the two Rumanian units onto each Belgrade objective.
Still, only a minor victory... Maybe the Rumanians were not in the correct location even though I shifted them around for a couple of turns. I got a turn-15 save if anyone would like to have a look.
I think this scenario could be a bit harder, add a couple more Yugoslavian armor and/or fighters for the later turns. This should keep the Germans on their toes a bit longer.

'Bug' (victory conditions setting) has been reported - only need one of those Romanian officers in Belgrade to get the DV - 2 breaks the victory condition.

2 - Metaxas Line
Prestige start: 4233
Prestige end: 1766
Decisive Victory at turn 10/14
Upgraded all artillery to Sturmpanzer, PzIIIG to PZIIIH, PzIVD to PzIVE, Ju87B to Ju87R and all trucks to halftracks.
Units bought: Wehrmach inf x2, Panzer IVE
Units lost: 3 Panzers and one cavalry

The Allied bomber starting at (6,7) is dead meat as it is spotted on German turn-1. Better deploy this unit further behind the lines.
Also, i would replace the Valentine in Bogdanci (3,8) with an infantry unit and move the armor unit to clear terrain.
There are some British armor arriving at turn-10 on the east map edge, bring them in a couple of turns earlier or trigger their arrival if the Axis get within 2 hexes of Kavala (23,12).
The scenario is on the easy side.

3a -Crete Air
Level: General
Prestige start: 4233
Prestige end: 1178
Briefing: "With the Metaxas line left impotently behind you..."
"...you should expect to encounter significant enemy resistance attempting to thwart your invasion."
Units bought: Wurfrahmen
Units lost:

Unfortunately I have some problems with the unhistorical premises for this scenario and this spoils a bit of the fun for me.
Why start with the Fallschirmjägers first wave already on Maleme and Rethymno airfields? Half the airborne fun is the scattered drops and the fight to gain control of the field. Also there are Gebirgsjägers already on Crete, their arrival should be triggered by occupation of the various airfields.
The ability to deploy your core panzers on Crete is a major unhistorical German advantage, most of the few panzers allocated to Crete were sunk in the two convoys. Your core panzers should ideally start off-shore.
The airfield south of Suda did not exist and Greek units were mainly deployed inland in the Chania-Souda sector and at Iraklio. The Iraklio airfield is way too close to the town, it was situated about 25km east (and christened 'Buttercup').
Chania should definately be a major objective, it was one of the possible ports designated for the convoys. Remove the Galatas objective instead.
And why are the airfields not objectives, they were the major targets for the Fallschirmjägers.
There were no Valentines or Cruisers on Crete, only a scant few Mathildas.
There were only two Italian destroyers escorting the two German convoys, Lupo and Saggitario. If you need more destroyers you could add the destroyers escorting a third Italian convoy landing (much) further east on Crete; Fransesco Crispi, Libra, Lince and Lira.
The British naval group 'Task Force E' arriving from the east consisted of light cruisers Carlise, Calcutta, Naiad and Perth escorted by the destroyers Kandahar, Kingston and Nubian.

Anyway, back to the game :-)
With the forewarning of the British naval vessels the Germans kept tactical and strategic bombers on hand. All transports got ashore and the RN was destroyed by turn 9 when the Germans captured the last objective.
The scenario was initially tough and satisfying, but the Allied defense crumbled quickly in the Chania-Suda sector and Rethymno. Iraklio was a bitter fight, but numerical superiority carried the German assaults home.
In the end I found this too easy.

3b -Crete Naval
Level: General
Prestige start: 2616
Prestige end: 780
Units bought: Do217E x2, Wurfrahmen
Units lost: Grenadier, aux Fallschirmjäger

I like this Crete-version much better, far closer to the historical challenges the German faced. Still I would like to have the FJs in their Ju52s ready for the jump.
The Royal Navy "Task Force D" should arrive from the west and I would include "Task Force E" arriving from the east (please see previous post).
Task Force D included the light cruisers Orion and Ajax and the destroyers Hast, Hereward, Kimberley and Janus.
The combined task forces should prove difficult for the Luftwaffe, maybe they need one or two He111s/Ju88s.
Historically the British sunk the convoys, but the Luftwaffe sunk and inflicted serious damage on the RN.
The scenario was tough with bitter fighting for the eastern objectives until the British were all eliminated on turn 15.
All objectives captured by the Germans.
This was the most enjoyable scenario for me so far. Still, I would have started the German convoys a bit further from the coast so that they would need one more turn to debark. Also give the Allies both British naval Task forces D and E (see this and previous scenario).
Difficulty level seems just right. I think the two Crete scenarios could be amalgated, all core units start off shore and only the FJs are on Crete itself.

4 - Minsk
Level: General
Prestige start: 2280
Prestige end: 191 (!)
Units bought: Grenadier x2
Units lost: Wehrmacht x2

First, the Russian airforce was destroyed on the ground. I think it is better to place ie one Russian air unit on each field with zero ammo. Then it is up to Luftwaffe to hunt the Russians down. Of course you can only use 109s and 110s since ther is no provision for bombing grounded aircraft.
I was reading elsewhere that this scenario was more difficult, but managed a decisive at turn 12 (of 20). I think the key is leaving the fort at Brest to the railway gun Karl-Gerat since nothing else will reduce it. Then it is only a matter of advancing at great speed and use tactical air units to deal with Russian armor.
To make this scenario slightly harder I would shave at least two turns. But it was quite fun as the Germans after the first skirmishes encounters increasing resistance. I had to use almost all prestige points to repair units. A fine scenario!

5 - Smolensk
Level: General
Prestige start: 1441
Prestige end: 1093
Units bought: Grenadier, Bf109, Grenadier
Units lost: Grenadier, Ju87, Bf109, Grenadier
Unit disbanded: Panzerjäger 1B

Another hard fought scenario, great fun. One infantry unit scouted the SE area with all the flags and got clobbered by a Russian counter-attack. Thankfully I had kept a couple of infantry units in reserve at Mogilev since Smolensk was pretty cramped.
The Germans got a decisive victory by T-15 (of 21). Even the massive rocket artillery and armor was no real match for Stukas, Bf110s and PzIVFs. This scenario could have been a bit more difficult, maybe add one objective in the SE corner but not too far in. only just enough to lure Germans into a trap.
Good fun though.

6a - Zhitomir beta2
Level: General
Prestige start: 2843
Prestige end: 979
Units bought: Gebirgsjäger x3, PzIVF, Bf110D
Units lost: Wurfrahmen, StuGIIIB, Sturmpanzer
Unit disbanded:

I would have named the option ie Zhitomir (road to Kiev)
The plot thickens as the Germans meet increased resistance towards Kiev. Russian cavalry have a nasty habit of appearing inbetween German combat units attacking support units. The conscipts are weak and easily taken care of, but the T34s are tougher nuts to crack. Good!
The Kiev flags are too heavily defended to be of interest to the German player. And with no objectives in this area there is no incentive to go there and lose more units than the prestige you gain.
Nice scenario with a good balance, managed a decisive at turn 15 (of 18).

6b - Ostrov beta2
Level: General
Prestige start: 2843
Prestige end: 367
Units bought:
Units lost: Wurfrahmen, PzIVF
Unit disbanded:

I would have named the option ie Ostrov (road to Leningrad).
Good, balanced scenario. The Germans managed a decisive on turn 15 (of 18). Little prestige left after using most of it on repairs.
I think the lack of rivers helped the Germans here as a couple of strategically placed rivers would slow the Germans a turn or two.
