Maybe best to use it in established defensive positions, e.g. on clear ground backed up with artillery (maybe even two) and flanks protected as well...
Forget it. There are too few purely defensive scenarios for a purely defensive unit to be useful. Also, defending a fixed position will give a unit too few chances to attack to level up, and if you stay in one place too long the enemy AI will, painfully slowly, eventually get its artillery into position. If you can't use a unit offensively you it isn't worth having.

Fortunately to Pak 43 is good offensively, using the tricks mentioned above as well as if it has a move hero. So for me I'm never going to have 4 of these, but I might have 1 or 2 with whatever AT units get a move hero.

I agree, probably you are right, 1-2 seems a reasonable number to have I guess...

When I said situational, I really meant it. It's hard to have too many situational units in a corps because of the drag on versatility and efficiency. I only have one Pak 43 in my corps in my current playthrough and even that took a lot of baby sitting and careful deployment from GC39-GC43.

Yeah just not that many purely defensive battles. It just doesn't pay to use AT guns. As they are vulnerable to artillery and infantry. At least AAA is switchable, otherwise it wouldn't be used much outside a few times it hits some aircraft.
Plus At has poor initiative and often fires seconds meaning it takes losses.

The Gooseman's Favourite German units in each unit class

Post by goose_2 »

I am taking this original post and building my favorite German Units in each class.
These of course are my favorite's as I find them most useful for longest period of the game, not necessarily best unit in the game by the end.

Infantry:

Gebirgsjaeger 39 - This unit is the best to train up and get kills on your units as they have the longest life span. With their 3 movement and ability to move into almost any terrain without using full movement is so useful. I know this is not most peoples favorite but I find them on the receiving end of less damage and greater attack capabilities for an extremely cheap unit, and he is good for 4 of the 7 years of this war.

Tanks:

Tiger I - Once you upgrade a tank to a Tiger you no longer need to upgrade it anymore. You can, and I do on all my SE units, but Tiger holds their own even in Berlin. Biggest drawback is the lack of fuel.

Recon:

SdKfz 233 - First decent upgrade for your 222 to get in the last battle of 42. Now you have a recon with all terrain movement that can deal some decent damage.

Anti-Tank:

Elefant - Agree with original poster. Incredibly cheap for it's effectiveness.

Artillery:

21 - 30cm Nebelwerfer - This soft boy shredder will be your only chance to see a 3rd hero for your artillery. There are so many nice artillery for the German's to choose from but the Nebelwerfer's are the best overall artillery to utilize in the game.

Anti-air:

88 - Nothing better, if you are not using this as an effective AT/AA combo, you need to read all of these posts to learn how. It becomes incredibly easy once/if you get a +1 Movement hero on them. I try and buy 3 to build so I can get the needed hero to really cash in on their effectiveness.

Fighters:

Fw 190A - Agree with original post as this can hold it's own for the entire war as soon as it becomes available. Me-262 is impossible to bring down for the enemy, but the FW-190A is the most dominate once it hits the skies.

Tactical bombers:
Me-410 as the Fighter Bomber combo makes for a deadly combo and use most often when deciding between taking a Stuka or a Fighter Bomber. (I choose the top rung of the upgrade ladder, for obvious reasons.

Strategic bombers:

Henkel- Hands down best Strategic Bomber that I utilize on almost every battlefield, at least once I have air superiority at least.

That's my list. Would be great to hear other people's thoughts!

I'm a bit sad that nobody mentioned the 12.8cm AA. Granted you lose the AT attack, but that late in the war on the eastern front the 88 isn't damaging the armor like it used to. In exchange, the 12.8 is pretty much the only AA that can do meaningful damage to bombers. Without a move hero or range hero I won't buy it, but with one it becomes quite attractive- it can cover 91 hexes (50% more than without the hero) at that point so it has no trouble finding a target. With that kind of range, I can keep it well away from artillery so I can over strength to 15 and it will never, ever, take damage. It can then one-shot 10 strength fighters and devastate any bombers or over-strength fighters.

Ah, one of my favourite types of topics. Top 10's and things like that have some unique charm.

Infantry:

DE - Grenadiers - these guys pack a punch! Attack values are great for these guys and while they seem to take more casualties, I still prefer them over regulars anytime.
Overall - Any Cavalry - I always have one of these in my core as the mobility it offers is invaluavble somtimes.

Tanks:

DE - Panzer IVF and G - the first ones that make dealing with Soviet armor managable!
Overall - Churchill Crocodile -when you really, really need to clear a key entrenched hex...

Recon:

DE - SdKfz 234 - it's overkill and costly at that point, but at least it has great firepower
Overall - BA-64 - dirt cheap, in the Soviet campagin it really helps to plan the attack an if it gets blown up, getting a new one is no problem at all.

Anti-Tank:

DE - StuG III - I like my AT units to be mobile and amass exp as quickly as possible, so that's the first decent chance they get.
Overall - - StuG III - just too good and to useful to have anything else take this spot.

Artillery:

DE - Wespe - cheap and with decent ammo capacity, I never get bored of these.
Overall - SU-152 and ISU-152 - absolute monsters in that role, they mow down targets like crazy, and even the low ammo cap does not make them less useful or scary.

Anti-air:

DE - Wirbelwind - by the time I have them, they are really needed.
Overall - anything Italian, at least until their aircraft start becoming half-decent

Fighters:

DE - ME 262 - hardly a choice with the stats, worth every bit of prestige.
Overall - Macchi MC.205 - shoulde be Macchi MC.202, but that one is crimianlly underpowered in the game compared to the real deal, being inferior to the P-40 Warhawk.

Tactical bombers:

DE - Ju 87 D - the most useful and universal variant.
Overall - Tempest/Typhoon - for being able to fly without escorts with decent confidence, especially the Tempest.

Strategic bombers:

DE - Ju 88 - I stick with these guys over the HE111 and Dorniers.
Overall - B-29, it just feels like the ultimate tactical bomber, it's a bit too over the top for the cost, but I don't mind.

One of my favorite subjects. These are my favorite units not nessassarily most useful

INFANTRY- Pioneers, I only use the gifted super hero’s with large initiative bonus but still favorite.
TANK- Panther. Fast, hard hitting, and reasonably well armoured for the money
RECON- SdKfz 233. I like this unit for hitting soft targets and getting away. The 234 tempts you to use it to fight out of its weight class with that big hard attack.
AT- StuG III series. Useful to the end if well used and much cheaper than tanks for anti armour.
ART- StuH 42. Only use with range hero’s but the ability to use antitank critical. Because it levels up so fast as artillery when used as AT you get two for one experience bonus when attacking making it surprisingly good as antitank unit.
AA- The 88. I don’t believe an explanation is needed.
FIGHTER - Bf 109 series. I have loved the 109 since I was a child and facts and reason have not dimmed that love.
TACTICAL BOMBER- DO 335a. I know this plane comes late but damn do I look forward to it. High initiative and hard hitting makes it my favorite duel threat. Every thing about it is great.
STRATEGIC BOMBER- JU 88. Again childhood love that I cannot get over.
