Soviet Corps - new units suggestions

Post by uran21 »

Hello all,

Soviet Corps entered into a planning stage. We are thinking about producing new models and adding new units to the list.
You are all welcome to give your own suggestions and opinions about new units.

Suggestions can require new model to be produced or it may be a variant that will reuse already existing graphic.
What do you think can be improved and added here?

To start this topic rolling let me give you something of a first draft for a unit list:

Infantry

Soviet Ski

Siberian Inf

Soviet Marines

Tank

IS-3

T-28

Flamethrower

Recon

BA-11

M3A1 Scout Car

GAZ-67B

T-38

Sukhoy Su-12 (recon aircraft)

Anti-Tank

AT-1

ZIS-30

Artillery

203mm M1931

SU-5

SP-T-18

KV-2 (switcher)

Anti-Aircraft

25mm M1940

76mm M1938

SU-6

SU-11

Land Transport

Horse transport

Voroshilovets

ZIS-5V

Autocar Halftrack

Air Transport

Gribovski G-11 (glider)

Tactical Bomber

Tupolev SB

Strategic Bomber

Tupolev TB-3

Tupolev Tu-2

For non Soviet units Volkssturm infantry can be added for this expansion as well as basic Finish troops (ordinary infantry, ski infantry and at least one piece for all supportive weapons).

Special Elite units would be more suited for land forces so infantry and tanks in this case.

Just a side note we limit the new unit list to around 25-30 for balancing reasons, so don`t over do it with all your ideas and suggestions. :-)

This will be locked around X-mas and we decide on the final unit list, so we can start production after the holidays. Looking forward to all your input....

Finnish infantry should get extra defensive point/trait when you compare how well they did against soviet counterparts.

Finnish unit suggestions:

- Ski infantry. Better movement than soviet ski troops.
- Tank hunter team. Similar to german grenadier but better movement and weaker attack/defence?

- Fokker D.XXI fighter
- Bristol Blenheim Mk I and IV bomber

- Vickers 6-ton tank.

- Artillery mainly 76 mm models. Most important model 76 K 02.

Better-developed partisan units would be fun. They should have the ability to appear and disappear with relative ease, but be very vulnerable if caught. Probably this would involve somehow suspending the normal rules of spotting (or being spotted) for these units.

Don't forget lend lease stuff. That should be easy to add! Also, both sides used captured equipment.

Isn't Su-12 a postwar prototype?

However, maybe you want to go hypothetical.

One suggestion for LL units: 57mm AT on M3 Halftrack (aka T48 57 GMC)

As for LL Tanks - with T-34s and KVs around, will people really bother to buy Allied tanks? Otoh US/UK fighters would probably do better at least 41-42 than early war Soviet types...

I would think certain lend lease would get decent value. Valentines, Churchill's, Grants. M3 for scouting.

Certain earlier in the war but later the German tanks would totally out class them.

LL trucks should be an option in motorizing Soviet troops

In addition to the opening post:

INF:

Guards Cavalry
43 Guards Cavalry
Cossacks
- lose the Siberians, there were no special Siberian troops, it was just regular pre-war Soviet infantry but with full equipment, unlike the ones that were already depleted in fights with Germans.

TK:

OT-133 (flame tank)
OT-34 (flame tank)
M3 Stuart (lend-lease)

RCN:

BA-20
BA-27M
FAI-M
- lose Su-12, instead consider Tupolev R-Z or Polikarpov U-2. Or both.

AT:

SU-76i (on modified captured StuGIII chassis)

ATY:

BM-8-24 Katyusha (on T-60 tank chassis)

AA:

25mm on GAZ truck
Quad 7.62mm Maxim MG on GAZ truck

TPT:

ZiS-42 (halftrack)
Studebaker US6 (lend-lease)
Ford 2G8T (lend-lease)

ATP:

G-2 (converted Tupolev TB-3 for transport and paradrop duties)

TB:

A-20B (lend-lease)
B-25D (lend-lease)
Hurricane IIC (lend-lease)
Tu-2S (should be tac bomber, not strat)
Su-2

SB:

Yer-2
- lose Tu-2, see above

FTR:

Polikarpov I-153
La-5FN
P-40M (lend-lease)
P-39N (lend-lease)

I see people are suggesting a lot of different recon cars to be implemented. Historical accuracy aside this seems to me quite wrong when the amount of possible new units is limited considering that recons are probably the least used (or at least used in smallest amount) class of vehicles.

T-35 (Tank used mostly in 1938-9, useful for Finnish War)
P-15
more Tac Bombers
some free Polish formations (maybe just using
IS 3 and 4 for purposes of 1945-> conflict with Western Allies

Also, post '45 conflict needs to be larger than 1 scenario
eg. Ruhr and surrounds, Dijon45, Paris45, UK45

I was very sad when I found out only 1 scenario of this was in Allied Corps.

Campaign suggestion:
Poland39 - Finland - Barbarossa-> Stalingrad - Kursk - Bagration - Seelow/Berlin - post '45 conflict
with more than one or two branches
(AK has 2 -> Recon in Force to Alamein, then Perisa/India or Tunisia)
(AC has few -> historical path to D-Day, Market Garden, then V-Rockets and Cold War or Historical end, no Sealion?)

People are suggesting a lot of different recon cars?
Nobody but Radoye suggested a lot of units in the first place (and that's what the thread was created for, no?), and other than him, only a single recon was suggested, which is a LL unit and should be almost zero work for your artist. Heck, the unit could probably created with DCS. :P

I think it's your guys (read: the developers) job to filter out which units you want to add and which don't make the cut.
However, as can be seen from suggestions here and elsewhere as well as in the modding scene, many players are enthusiasts that enjoy seeing models even of exotic vehicles that won't get much time in the spotlight or a player won't sensibely use at all (the vast majority of german units in the campaign are not really useful to a cost-efficient player either), so maybe you guys should make a whole DLC just consisting of units for players and modders to use? See "Sprite Packs" for Paradox' Hearts of Iron games.
On the other hand, if you feel there's not enough money to be made with this, I guess it's not so bad, modders can always come to the rescue.

Ok "people are suggesting" was a bit wrong wording but if you look at the initial list made by Uran21 the recons are already one of the longer list, add the one suggested by Radoye and you get more recons on the list then every other single type and i think we agree that recons among with air defense are the least used class of vehicles. Heck i am the last one that would mind having more choices and more units implemented but keeping in mind this:

i personally think having around 20 (possible slight exaggeration here :P) anyway barely used recon units on the list would be a mistake.

I don't think anyone would disagree with you there.
Actually, it'd be preferrable if the game was rebalanced in a way that, for some strategies, recon would not be so utterly useless, and generally not purchasing only a few top of the line units not such a bad idea, but this is of course at this point out of the scope of patches.
Maybe if Rudankort get's around to do a sequel one day...

I actually find recons quite useful, and always have 2-3 in my core. Their special movement makes them great for sneaking behind heavily defended positions and attacking the supporting artillery from behind.

Every player has its own playing preferences when it comes to core composition.
When with certain faction core force is composed of it is important to have good upgrade path for classes. Upgrade path in general as well as upgrade path in certain periods of time. Recons, bombers, self propelled anti aircraft, early tank destroyers are some of spots in current roster worth considering in that respect.

Its a shame there is not a way to incorporate penalty battalions or night witches!!
Maybe a scenario for later in the war could be to capture an objective quickly enough to have say, Romania, or Bulgaria troops switch sides..
