Slitherine and Matrix Games Mourn the Passing of Two Gamers

Post by SeanD »

Slitherine and Matrix Games mourn the passing of two wargamers in our community: Darren Buckley of AGSI and Ian Trout of SSG. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to the family and friends of both men.

Ian Trout (1949-2011), President and co-founder of SSG, passed away today after losing his battle with cancer. Ian was the designer of most of SSG's games and his untimely death represents a huge loss to SSG and the games industry.

Darren Buckley (1966-2011), the long standing pillar in the Harpoon community, has also passed away at 44 years of age. Darren is best known for his work on HUD3, the larger of the two official databases. While the details of his passing are not clear, his contributions are.

I didn't know Ian was ill, but had a bad feeling some time back. That is a real loss to us all.

I met Ian Trout in 1983, as I recall, when he offered me an opportunity to work on "MacArthur's War", a game based on the Korean War of 1950-1953. At that time I was a HUGE SSG fan and was thrilled to participate in an SSG project, and so I was happy as can be to meet Ian in person at a gaming trade show in the USA. I am very sorry for his loss and offer my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

When my wife and I met Ian we talked about our international travel experience, and I was affected by our recent travel to Mexico where I met an Austrailian couple who had a low opinion of Americans. It was the "Ugly American" syndrome in real-time and I felt quite uneasy about it. The Australian couple we met expressed their concerns about Americans in general due to a stupidly rude American they encountered, and I related this story to Ian when we first met. I was happy and grateful that Ian held an open mind and allowed himself to get to know me better before passing judgement. I always held Ian in high regard and am very sorry for his passing, as is the fate of all human beings, but it was and always will be a highlight of my life to have met him. SSG is a great game company and that is a fine legacy in itself, in addition to his fine personal qualities as a human being. Goodbye Ian, I am sorry you are not still among us in the flesh, but you remain close to us in your spirit.
