Indeed. Now my NMA has a chance (at least) of not finishing bottom!viking123 wrote:It would not be the same without you.

Hi Bob
Along with the new points system, is it confirmed we will be picking 800 point armies from the 3 periods proposed by Will Denham (which would rule out my ECW Parliamentarians and other suggestions for using the NMA and the Scots Covenanters)?

David,
Will's 3 periods relate to Campaign not our ECW Oxford Round of the Southern League.

Another player to add from Wessex - my son Patrick will be coming with us. Brings our contingent up to 4 (Davids Hewkin and Eggleston, and me are the others).

It will be great to have Patrick at the Oxford Round. Is he going to come higher in the finish than you!!!!

Unlikely, given he'll be using my dice - but you never know, they all have 6s on them (somewhere).....

Re: Oxford Round of the Southern League 2017
Patrick may conclusively prove it's not the dice that are unlucky but......
Re: Oxford Round of the Southern League 2017
I did think once about making it similar to "The Worlds" were the dice are provided by the organisers. This stops claims of either unlucky dice or rigged dice.
I have enough dice to do it but my colleagues are unsure.
This would prove whether it is Brendan's dice that are at fault or his generalship!!!!!

But who'd want to borrow your dice? We've nearly all seen how bad they can be!

Re: Oxford Round of the Southern League 2017
About three years ago, I was - unknowingly - slipped some loaded dice (weighted to roll 6s). My first three throws were 1,1 then 1,2 and then 1,1 again. Being told, then shown, how the dice were loaded, had me the closest I think I've ever been to tears around a wargames table.

Re: Oxford Round of the Southern League 2017
I am not talking about the dice I use but rather I bought two "Pound-O-d6" from Cheessex a few years ago. These have never been used, so they are unaffected by my touch.

Re: Oxford Round of the Southern League 2017
I'm not sure you need to have a pool of dice for all competitors. Brendan's laments about his die rolling are just that rather than any suspicion about dice. Before he joined our club I had the reputation for being the worst die roller, a title I gladly surrendered to him. His dice have been appalling from the moment I met him at a refight of Long Island some years back but sooner or later his luck must change and he is due, at least, a decade long winning streak
Re: Oxford Round of the Southern League 2017
Hi Bob,
Could you please enter me and Steve Holt for this event. Wayne and Lynnette are also considering coming.
With up to 30 players and only 8 different armies have you considered a method to prevent all 30 of us turning up with the same army? How about limiting it to 5 of each army on a first come first served basis?
This would give you at least 6 different armies and players could avoid using the worst 2 army lists.
If you get less than 30 players just lower the 5 to 4 etc to get the same effect.
Over to you Bob.
Regards Dene

Re: Oxford Round of the Southern League 2017
In fairness, there are more than 8 options when you include all the variants, some of which can vary enormously from the "vanilla" version - eg Cornish Royalists, Northern Association Parliamentarian, Philliphaugh Covenanters, Pwinth Woopert'th Woyalitht Wapid Waiding Forth, etc. That said, my first year at Oxford (2015), I did bring a Late Royalist army that played three other Late Royalist armies - and there were four more listed, so eight in total from a field of 22; but maybe that was just the "armee du jour"?
Maybe we could all declare for King or Parliament (or some "third force"), pool the armies, and then dish them out randomly on the day so you play the "correct" side, but not your own army?

Re: Oxford Round of the Southern League 2017
Dene that will be great to have you and Steve at Oxford. What about Paul and your brother Simon? We will be using Paul's spreadsheet once Nik has finalised all the points issues.
I can think about at least 5 armies that should be coming to Oxford , if people bring what I think they will bring.
It is always a problem with tight themed competitions that a number of people will bring the same army. It happened at Campaign a couple of times. I would be concerned that either forcing someone to bring a specific army or not allowing them to play their own army would mean less players would attend. It may work in an in-house competition but with people coming some distance it just may put them off.. Playing ECW is very much personal as players are either for King or Parliament.
I will try to ensure that no Oxford Player will play each other in the first round and linked to this that a Royalist will play a Parliamentarian. I think I managed that last year.
Talking about people playing what about Nik. He has said he will play at Campaign to see how the updates work but the Oxford Round is before that and will give him an earlier chance.

Geoff,
Can you persuade more of the Central London players to come. Most of them seem to declare for Parliament so it would be nice to see them in the King's Capital, especially that Australian!!!! He can now get from Marylebone Station to Oxford by train.
