Can the Mobile Market be viable for Slitherine?

Post by DonCzirr »

I see a lot of posts from various users here looking to see their favorite Slitherine games on mobile but the Slitherine guys usually cite a couple of points:

1. IOS - Apple is looking only to publish 64 bit Apps and the amount of 64 bit devices may not be enough at this time to ensure a profitable release
2. Android - generally is geared for lower quality / Fremium products as opposed to Slitherine's more cerebral and higher cost / quality strategy releases

Some good analysis of the general mobile publishing issues for IOS and Android here:

Given the recent revised approach to marketing Order of Battle on Steam however, I wonder if that is the way to go on Android?

Offer it for free - so you grab the Fremium crowd which is far more prevalent there and then charge for the campaigns as IAP?

Personally, I typically avoid all Free games on Android because you get most of the junk from that selection.

So perhaps a better approach than what I mentioned above would be to offer the base game for .99 or 1.99 just to get it out of that category and then make the really money from Campaign sales?

Sort of similar to what BattleFacotry did with October War 73 etc ...

As a Slitherine customer - would you potentially support that marketing model if it enabled them to bring your favorites to the mobile market?

*** Question is directed to Slitherine customers that have an affinity for mobile gaming and is not intended as an opening for PC vs Mobile - please use another thread for that if so inclined ***

To clarify, the 64-bit issue relates to our STUB-based games (BA/P&S/etc) and is because significant internals pack pointers into 4 bytes as a matter of course, and rewriting these elements to allow 64bit pointers to work correctly would be a major task. It's made all the more frustrating by the fact that every 32bit app will run quite happily on every existing Apple device. Effectively all apps must currently run on BOTH, so it's not a market size issue.

As a general element of the discussion, I will point you to this article which came out just yesterday: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... al-with-it

It may be a little hyperbolic, but it does have some salient points.

Cheers

Thanks for the clarification on the 64 bit item Pip.

As for the article - it sounds to me like the Order of Battle model you guys have on Steam might fit in with that strategy for Android?
