hi everyone,
i am new to slitherine and these forums, actually, im new to this type of wargaming.
my name is chris and i am 23 yrs old. ive been playing real time strategy games since i was 10. (command and conquer, Age of empires, starcraft etc...)
when i was 18-19, i went competitive in starcraft 2 and played/practiced on a B team with dreams of going PRO. unfortunately, i suffered from severe wrist issues that made this impossible.
now i spend my time playing games like company of heroes and Ruse but i cannot play too much or be competitive because of my wrists.
Anyways,
im in desperate search for a great world war 2 strategy game for multiplayer. Something with a strong multiplayer community. i was wondering if you guys could help me? that would be awesome.
ive been currently looking at Gary grisbys war in the East, unity of command, panzer corps and the hearts of iron series.... but i want something for great multiplayer. ( i saw there is a new close combat game as well?)
thank you so much for taking the time to read this
chris

GGs WitE is a good game, and there seem to still be people playing pbem. It is a great deal of fun to play as pbem, but is rather time consuming (expect atleast 30mins per turn).
If you are feeling even more hardcore, GGs War in the Pacific : Admirals edition would be a good buy (huge scale, 1,2 or 3 days per turn, covering the entire war in the Pacific. Not something you will understand fully untill you have played it for some time though, but really thrilling pbem play here).
Panzer Corps is not really a multiplayer game imo, it is Panzer Genral +.
HoI....well, imo those are more "beer and pretzel"games than the Slitherine/Matrixgames listed (with the exception of PC), and not really my thing.
As to how strong the various multiplayer communtities still are, I would check out the foums at matrixgames or here to see how many people are active at the forums (sorry that I cannot be more of a help, but have not have the time to really do pbems the last few years, so I simply do not know).
If I were to recommend you to buy one game only, it would be WitE or WitP:AE depending on a few factors;
a) how hardcore do you want it (WitP:AE is more so than WitE)?
b) do you enjoy one theathre over the other?
c) how much time do you expect to use per day (WitP:AE tends to take more time than WitE)
I have played and enjoyed both of them, both vs the AI and in pbem (latter ofc more fun).
NB! WitE, WitP:AE and PC are NOT realtime

No, sorry, never played Unity on Command.
A good start for any game is to look/read a few AARs, the ones with pictures (and alot of hits) are usually a good indication on how the game works and how thrilling the game is.

Hi Chris,
Why don't you take a look at The Operational Art of War (http://www.matrixgames.com/store/317/No ... of.War.III) or JT's Campaign Series (http://www.matrixgames.com/store/318/Jo ... ign.Series)
And, if you're into multiplayer games, I'd join The Blitz Wargaming Club...
Best,
f
