The Getae were the most northerly Thracian tribe, inhabiting the area that is now north-east Bulgaria and parts of Rumania - their most eastern extent is subject to argument. Anyway, the Dacians did speak a Thracian language that showed their Getic roots. It is possible that the Dacians moved into t...

Probably because many of the peltasts that came from Thrace were not Thracians, but Greeks from the coastal cities of Thrace eg Iphicrates' men who beat up the Spartans are thought to have been Greeks from Thrace.

Actually the Dacians used the falx, which had a wooden handle. The Bessi and other mountain/southern Thracians used the rhomphaia, which was an all metal weapon that was longer and straighter than the falx (though still curved). See the Osprey book "The Thracians 700 BC- 46AD" for archaeological evi...

Ancient Greeks are possibly descendants of Thracians or related with them this I've red on 'wiki' 'Paleo-Balkan languages' That's correct, there does seem to be a series of migrations from the north into Greece before the Classical era, which would mean that some of those people would have come fro...

Terrain

How does terrain get placed under these rules? Will I find that there is always a large area of empty space like there is in DBM, making rough terrain armiies useless? Will there be secret ambushes? It's fine to encourage balanced armies, but the armies that work better in difficult terrain should h...

Banning Latin Greek Words maybe not such a good idea given the popularity of DBA, DBM, DBR, and other rulesets with Greco-Latin names! I have a long list, so I thought i throw in some silly ones to make reading it a little less boring.... Tabletop General General and Chieftan From Chariots to Cannon...

LOL! Thanks, sounds pretty good, I actually think 7th Edition/Warrior has an elegant method of combining fatigue, shooting, thirst, glare etc factors that really works very well but adding and subtracting so many factors all the time (plus calculating fractions for shooting and combat results etc) a...

Hi, my favourite army is Thracian, although in a DBM open competition it's best to use a derivative such as Dacian, Lysimachid, or Bithynian. Yes, I know its not a Tourney Tiger but its colourful and it used to cause huge casualties. You guys seem to have pretty good knowledge of this army (talked t...

skirmishers and elephants and 7th edition

1. Hi, in Spartan/Gates of Troy, putting your skirmishers in front of your heavy units is generally a bad idea, as they can't run away before contacting something nasty - they can only rout afterwards. This isn't exactly historical, and is it also true in AOW? Is there a scouting points mechanism li...

Hi, Cavalry do move faster in the campaign map but only on the right terrain - there are a lot of mountains, forsts, hills etc in Greece, which is one reason why hoplite warfare predominated there. You will see that an all skirmisher army will zip around comparitively quickly in that difficult terra...

building villages etc to the next level

Hi, I noticed that although upgrading town sites to the next level costs a lot of bricks etc, all it seems to do is give you an extra site on which to build things, and possibly increase population growth (so maybe it is more effiicent to just go and conquer another site if you already have a few). ...

A fun tactic to try

Hi, I am running the Lydian/"arrival of the Persians" scenario and attacked a Cnidian force of Astynomia with a superior force that included a general with just a few battles under his belt and no modifications. I had planned to "long halt" my battle line while three cavalry units swept around the f...

Alliance with AI players

Hi, I'm just playing against the computer. Aparently I can ally with another player when they are 94% friendly with me. I went to 95% and am rated as very friendly with that country, but no mention of an alliance. Have I got to get some special building or something to have an alliance? Do I get to ...

PDA

Hi, any chance these rules might ingegrate the use of a PDA into a game eg it could store the rules in searchable format, but most importanly, it would be really nice if you could just punch in a few variables and have the dice rolled and the combats worked out for you? Also, any chance of the rules...

Unfortunately Thracians conquer the world by getting drunk, singing, and fighting, not by building schools!! (being tribal people they are not allowed any upgrades on universities)

Is that all? Is there no "feel good" factor to commerce like there is in Medieval Total War? Incidentally, I prefer individual battles in Medieval Total War but as a campaign Spartan is better, since a Total War battle might take an hour to complete and there might be five of them in one turn- it do...

Commerce

What does increasing commerce do? There are several buildings that do this, but the manual doesn't say what increasing commerce affects. Just finished my first Thracian campaign (Wot no rhomphaia men?), finally the Thracians are free to fight amongst themselves again without Greek or Persian interfe...

Which unit is better? List of units ranked by combat power?

Hi, is there a list somewhere that ranks units by combat power, other things being equal? (ie in favourable terrain with the same experience and unit size) For instance, a Thureophoroi is better than a Peltast, but is a Peltast better than a Thracian? Is a Pisidian javelinman equal to an Agrianian? ...
