Re: When do you dismount lancers?

If you play with historical opponents, dismounting some of your lancers can be helpful: 1) in an era of mediocre infantry vs infantry power , some superior offensive spears can be very useful. 2) if you have a bunch of lancers, and your opponent has a bunch of lancers, neither side can easily achiev...

Re: 2019 Tournament

So I have 9 signed up so far. It would be great to get 16. I will keep it open for joining until the end of the month. So anyone who is thinking of joining in please let me know. Can you also let people you are playing know as well, the more people we have playing the more variety of battles we all...

Re: Double-Breaks Far too Frequent

Ok Pete, my original post was not personal nor directed at any one person, it was meant as a proverbial glass of cold water splashed into this current series of complaints about rng. The same theme came up over and over in fog1 and it was tedious. This is all about personal taste. Since You don’t li...

Re: Double-Breaks Far too Frequent

Oh for the love of Ares, Mars, Loki and other assorted gods of war and misfortune, not this tired old theme again. “Im a tactical genius and should have won if not for rng” said every wargamer at least once in their career... It’s ok to gripe about it here and there , ie grognard griping, but this ...

Re: Offensive Spearmen vs Impact Foot

For me it would be hard choice between identical spearmen and impact foot (rare option if it even exists). If I knew the opponent had a lot of hoplites I would rather bank on high quality impact foot and if I knew the opponent had better quality impact foot I would probably try to overwhelm them wi...

Re: Multiple move madness

I assume some sort of due process is in order but if what Cunningcairn says is true, it seems pretty cut and dry. Are you suggesting I'm lying? Hey cunning, I wouldn’t take it that way, I think what was meant was even the sketchiest act by an individual merits an official “explain yourself before j...

Re: Offensive Spearmen vs Impact Foot

Analytics aside, if I have the choice in grabbing an impact foot unit or two versus an offensive spear or two, I will always take the impact. More versatile, poa is not dependent on being steady, and to deliver a possible decisive blow at impact can’t be denied as advantages.

Re: Charge cavalry too weak

Well, the following excerpts from Aelian's On Tactical Arrays of the Greeks don't solve all the riddles, but they are quite interesting. Note he mentions shock and charge quite often and his writing suggests there IS a lot of presumed contact being made here between infantry and cavalry. He mentions...

Re: Charge cavalry too weak

I think Leonardus is being picked on needlessly, when A he likely hasn’t played the game too long and B possibly isnt a native English speaker... OK, but with all due respect, it is a bit difficult for me to take someone seriously when they say this to RBS: You're not knowing what you're talking ab...

Re: Charge cavalry too weak

I think Leonardus is being picked on needlessly, when A he likely hasn’t played the game too long and B possibly isnt a native English speaker, plus I suspect he was aggravated when it was suggested he was implying that knights CRASHED landed purposefully into formed infantry in his post. I don't th...

Re: Charge cavalry too weak

I'd rather see non shock infantry take a cohesion test when charged by lancers ( fail, drop a level and then impact hehe) but some might deem that too much... I do get agrieved when my expensive lancers bounce off or fail to damage the light spear types. Until someone is able to come up with a larg...

The only weapon type for the cavalry to charge the foot frontally should be "lance". I doubt light spear can do any harm in this situation. I just talk about the lance.
Light spear also presumes javelins are included and hurled with great force at point blank range.

Re: Charge cavalry too weak

Chock cavalry would have little chances of success if charging a solid formation of steady infantry. Something I find a bit suspicious though, is how well 'raw' spearmen (and other infantry) hold against such charges in FoG2. I would think that raw units would lack a lot of the confidence and cohes...

Re: 500 AD global campaign - Year 512 battles are up

The east Romans narrowly defeat the Caucasians 60 -56. The enemy light foot, lead by lieutenant Sharpe, almost broke the legions!

In other news , the Romans avenge Valerians old bones by defeating the Sassanid host 48-18.

Thanks for the games!

Re: Pike / deep pike PoA

It's interesting that no one has picked up on the fact that the Pikes are unique, in that their POA for their weapon is totally dependent upon the depth of their formation. If their formation is only two ranks deep, ie; through casualties or if you create a half strength Pike unit for a mod, they g...

Re: Pike / deep pike PoA

RBS addressed this in a post back in October (sorry can’t link it right now) but 10% causulties will reduce the 4th rank bonus by 40%. Or another way of looking at it: as the unit strength is reduce from 100-75%, the 4th rank poa drops from 100 to 0. Presumably the third rank poa drops from 100 to 0...
