Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

In the meantime, I'll run some tests and post results and the relevant files here for anyone to review/comment on. Just remember that being unmaneuverable and allways pursuing enemy are drawbacks included in the points. So points wise Warband should beat another equally expensive unit in 1v1 combat...

Re: Reward for historical Formation

Alexander used reserves in several battles to good effect for example. Could you give an example of Alexander deliberately using a reserve? Certainly he would deploy free troops to trouble areas when he could, but that's not the same thing as a reserve. Much like the strategic reserves in the ancie...

Re: Reward for historical Formation

i would both agree and disagree about reserves in ancient armies. Alexander used reserves in several battles to good effect for example. There are many battles involving Roman armies that clearly stationed reserve forces and used them to good effect many times. Even in battles the Romans lost their ...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

You could make superior warband a little smaller. That would make it stand melee little less and give a legion (which has almost the same point value) at least a little change in 1 to 1 situation. Are you not completely dismissing the fact that warbands are unmaneuverable and will always follow and...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

I tried with editor, 20 roman legionaries (78pnts) in row , all in open plain, no generals vs case-1. 20x average close order warband (63 points each) result: IMPACT 2 romans pushed back on impact, 1 of them got distrupted 5 warbands got distrupted & pushed back, 2 got fragmented & pushed b...

Re: Reward for historical Formation

Regarding the Romans in particular we have usually only the Roman point of view There is quite a bit of Greek writing on Roman military action, too, notably Polybius. But I agree that 'we fought X-million dudes!' is a trope of the Romans, as well as the Greeks. I would like to see something like an...

Re: Reward for historical Formation

On purpose, so as not to degrade the AI. There are excellent reasons to have a partial reserve line without such a rule. Hellenistic armies did not use reserve lines anyway, so it isn't realistic for them. Even the Romans only had a partial rear line - with gaps opposite the units of the "seco...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

I'm no expert in the subject matter of replacement of troops but it is reasonable to think this was done at Century level at all times, even between Cohorts.

Re: Generals

Only reason is if would want to swap a general to any of those units. A general can only be in a unit within his command except for the C-in-C.

There is basically no reason not to get you general stuck in if you have mostly unmaneouverabe units.

Re: Generals

Generals did have a sphere of influence of their command in reality this should be reflected by your line of vision and their ability to send out runners to give orders to unit commanders. Also armies almost never moved in small individual cohort sized units but where divided into battles or smalle...

Re: Zama - Historical Simulation - Good Joke part 2

Don't know if OP is trolling but I will take the bait. AI is competent. The fact that it does not care about loosing generals is because they are not extremely important in this game, which is rather historically inaccurate (especially when it comes to C-in-C). The game genarelly does not factor th...

Re: Generals

There are several "omissis" in FoG 2 which in my humble opinion seem to come from engine's limits rather than "deliberate design decision". With the exception of the army movement (which is a nice feature but nothing amazing) anything that is not the previous titles (P&S and...

Re: Reward for historical Formation

How much evidence do we really have Romans could do this during a battle with any actual frequency. Most battle seem to suggest that reinforcements plugged gaps as they opened in the front line. I'm not sure it would be possible to take an entire Cohort with the width of nearly a hundred yards have...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

I just played the first battle of the Caesar campaign and my gut feel (and it's a majestic gut) is that average warbands are too resilient over time and hold firm too often against superior/elite opponents. I'm going to replay the battle and actually count a few things this time to get some accurat...

Re: Reward for historical Formation

Just give a rapid look to the manual, you'll find some more lack from FoG 1  We have been told that many changes have to do about the AIs capability of exploiting them versus humans, I would like an advanced command option in MP or Hotseat games that introduce more Command and Fog of War feat...

Re: Reward for historical Formation

---It would be great if troops get a reward for being in the formation they are trained for. --- Actually, troops shouldn't be rewarded for doing what they were trained to do and were expected to do historically. Game parameters should already assume optimal performance when units are used in a his...

Re: Reward for historical Formation

IMO one of the main historical feature that is not reproduced in this game (and in many if not all games) is that there is no sense (or there is only a little sense) to use more than one line of cohorts. IMO there should be some way to withdraw from melee by infantry units without being routed and ...
